I think the last four letters are SOME (from Somerset) but I cannot see a word that matches te clue!!

Gamesome? (means playful)
It's better than anything i can think of but I can't see where the halt comes into it though
Game can mean crippled/lame, as can halt

Thanks to you all. I looked up game leg (until now I thought it was spelled "gamey") and it matches calibax's logic.
Also 'gamesome' fits with the pattern. All the left side across answers begin with G the right side answers end in S.
