Can anybody give me the tiniest hint on what to do once I have solved all the clues (which I have). I can't for the life of me see how to put 46 letters in a thematic order. Anything would be appreciated

Hello oldboot3, You do not have to put the the "withdrawn" letters in a thematic order. They are already in a thematic order! When read in that order they define the title of a work. Try looking up the definition of withdraw in the BRB! In clue number order they make no sense whatsoever!

I thought it was a very tough endgame to this one.

Am I terminally thick or what? I've sorted out the withdrawn letters, got the definition of the work and identified the work and the line mentioned but I can only find two such characters in the grid. Where the devil are the other two hiding?
They are in there somewhere.... in the end we went to the final modification with the names that we had, and the pdm struck. I guess that is the equivalent of posting on this thread and getting the hm (hallelujah moment) as you hit send.

pdm??? Excuse my ignorance!
oldboot3, pdm = Penny Drop Moment, that also might help find the 2 other characters lurking in the grid!
The other two are in there and indeed seem to be hiding. Think author and a way of indentifying him.
