It took me a while to realise that this was going in a whole other direction from actual current EV setters! For a while in the middle, before making the breakthrough, my enthusiasm for the puzzle was waning but it perked up markedly near the end once the penny finally dropped. Nice effort by a new pair of names to the setting business, although I suspect that the in-joke implies that Ian and Steve have been in the game for a while.

Like you, Jim, I enjoyed this once I worked out what was going on - which took a while, perhaps because of the impending return to work tomorrow after our summer break. It's difficult to be at one's best when one is feeling so gloomy.

However, the end did perk me up, and I thought it impressive of Ian and Steve to get so many thematic entries - and in a nice symmetrical arrangement. There's a danger that one-trick puzzles such as these turn into a slog, but there were some nice clues to keep one entertained along the way. I don't know if Ian and Steve are old hands or new ones, but hopefully we'll see them again.
Yes, I spent a lot of pointless effort in trying to squeeze old favourites into the grid before I saw what was going on. A very nice idea, and very well executed. Many thanks, Ian and Steve, whoever you may be.
I'm still (drinking and) struggling with this one. Will the recorded Match of the Day 2 which I'm just about to watch cheer me up? Me Liverpool, her Arsenal.
I think one of you will be cheered!
At first I thought this was either very self indulgent or a bit of a
wind-up.
I did the setters a great disservice as it proved to be a well set
crossword. I have a thought about the identities of Ian & Steve!
Well done.
I am really stuck on this one and haven't a clue what is going on! I have solved about 20 clues, some of which have to be replaced but I cannot see with what. There is an obvious entry for 1 across but I cannot see what is has to do with the clue or what would then fit in 1 down. Any hints would be gratefully received please. Many thanks
Bobbybunny, a puzzle is BY a setter. The important word there is capitalised...
Goodness! Thank you very much EV_Solver, I can see a few entries now. I will plod on!
