4a.Quotation is an estimate. T S Eliot's earliest are TSE which is reversed(recalled) + i(one) +mate (colleague) Hope this makes sense to you.

Oh I got the parsing of the first two, though 1a is a mite obtuse, suppose that's why they're called toughies, it's the rest just not making any sense
They can be a bit hard, but ,as you say, that is why they are called Toughie
