skiters?
Question Author
I thought that but to me it sounded a rude word but I thank you for your reply
skitter - definition of skitter by The Free Dictionary www.thefreedictionary.com/skitter v. skit·tered, skit·ter·ing, skit·ters. v.intr. 1. To move rapidly along a surface, usually with frequent light contacts or changes of direction; skip or glide quickly: lizards ...
I think SKITTERS is not a nice word.
Skiter appears here:

skite [skəit]
v. To dart, to shoot, fly through the air suddenly and forcibly, to bounce or fly off at a tangent. To slip, slither or slide on a slippery surface.
Hi FF, must be alternate spelling as both appear to have similar meanings.
Hi danny- I got mine from this Scottish online dictionary
http://www.scots-online.org/dictionary/read.asp?letter=S&CurPage=56
Skitters definitely has a different meaning in Scotland - "To have diarrhoea. To waste time, to dawdle, to potter about, to slither or slip awkwardly."
But skite can have a similar meaning too:
"skite [skəit]
n. A nasty or objectionable person.
v. To have diarrhoea, void thin excrement, eject forcibly.
SKITE (pronounced ***) is a Scots term meaning:
To shoot off at an angle or cause or throw (a stone) to skip over the surface of water.
So past tense skimmed stones would be SKITERS (which is also an anagram of strikes as used in the clue.
