Am I correct in thinking that the answer to 26ac should be Stendahl, authors pen name, not Henri Beyle which is the authors real name and the answer the checking letters lead you to?

I agree that, as stated, that part of the puzzle doesn't work. Nowt for it but enter HB as far as I can see.
