All solved, except 20d and 38a. None of the words which I can find which fit seem to have any connection to the middle part of 40a (as 8d does). Most vexing.

H. - Birman and ragdoll are breeds of cat - both in Bradley's (I'd never heard of them either).

Many thanks, Ironie. My edition of Chambers (the one before the 2012 edition), does not give either of these words as a type of cat. I usually find Doc's puzzles are much more straightforward than those of, say, Mr Magoo or Lavatch, but I think it is a tad unfair if one has to refer to a copy of Bradford's to verify the solution.
