Do I have an incomplete clue? I'm doing this on my iPad and the clue I have is what I gave in my question, viz. Sproduction(9) vertically with no mention of "doing role badly"

It's good to get an explanation - I thought the clue was pretty strange. Back in the UK tomorrow so back to real rather than virtual newspapers. You've all saved my sanity and reminded me of the limitations of technology . However, without it I wouldn't have been able to tackle the last couple of week's crosswords or to talk to you all! Thanks again.
