When someone is lucky why do we call them jammy?

Before the First World War, 'jammy' meant just that...covered in jam or sticky. It has meant 'lucky' for about a century on the basis that - if you're jammy - good luck just seems to 'stick' to you. 'Jam' itself has meant something good or sweet - just like luck - for quite a bit longer.
