Ive heard of the nursery rhyme Goosey Goosey Gander. Maybe its something to do with that. The Goosey in the rhyme wanders over the house and meets an old man who wouldnt say his prayers so was taken by the left leg and thrown down the stairs - charming!! Maybe when they expected everyone to pray it was a way of letting children know that if they didnt then something nasty would happen to them?
