Does anyone know the origin of "see a man about a horse" in reference to using the mens' room?

I always thought it was.."See a man about a dog"

Me too - you go to see if the blanket's slipped off the horse, don't you?
My ex always used to refer to going off to "water the horses"

Are you confusing different phrases.

I think seeing a man about a dog just means having to go to out do something - but not necessarily go to the mens' room.
