A pole vaulter

A man was walking down the street when he became annoyed by a young man walking in front of him. The young man was wearing sports kit and he was carrying a long fibreglass pole over his shoulder. The pole was bouncing up and down on the sportsman's shoulder and the end was waving around in a dangerous manner.

After a while the first man decided he was going to have to have a word with the sportsman as the pole might have taken someone's eye out or caused some other injury. However, he also wanted to be tactful and appear friendly so as not to upset the young man. So he dodged the pole, stepped alongside the sportsman and asked :-

"Excuse me young man. I hope you don't mind me asking.....but are you a pole vaulter?"

The sportsman looked a little surprised then replied in a heavy Teutonic accent :-

"Nien, I am a German......but tell me friend, how do you know my name!"
