Dyslexia is ruining my life. I started a new job two weeks ago and I've just left, in tears as I just couldn't do the simplest things. I find doing everyday things E.g. texting people and remembering things hard and it's really starting to get to me down now. I've tried doing a learn direct course to improve my confidence and knowledge, however after a few lesions they practically kicked me out as I've got C grades and above for my G.C.S.E's. I've looked into special courses souly for dyslexic people but they're 35 plus and they don't start until September. I don't know what to do, I've tried talking to my friends and sister but they don't seem to understand or be able to help me. It would be really good if some one who is also dyslexic could give me some advice, however I would be grateful for any replies. Thank you in advance

No offence, but you seemed to write that pretty well.
That was unduly harsh Octavius, not like you at all!

I can't offer advise Rebecca as I've had no dealings with anyone who's suffered from this. However just by Goggling "Dyslexia Courses" I came across page after page of sites, one of them surely must be of help to you.

First one I came across was this one...
http://www.lsbu.ac.uk/lluplus/dyslexia/trainin g.shtml

Good luck :-)
You are NOT dyslexic as you can write perfectly well if you were dylexic yow wud bee wrining lik ths! I think you just can't do the tasks you have to do for other reasons. Also if you can get grade C in GCSE's you can't be severly dyslexic.Stop making excuses and try and find out the REAL reason you're a div
B00, I have very good friend with severe dyslexia and his disability is quite bad, he is unable to write as eloquently as Rebecca has above. There is a book called Overcoming Dyslexia which may prove helpful, alternatively contact the British Dyslexia Helpline to find out about courses and teaching assistants local to you:

Helpline: 0118 966 8271

Maybe she is using a spell checker!!!! I use one!!!
I dunno Octavius maybe there's different levels of it? Maybe more severe in some than others? Like I said, I know nothing about it, so therefore I can't judge really.

My suggestion is that if Rebecca is so affected by it, then she would perhaps be better off talking to people who know lots about it and can help point her in the right direction. Hence the helpline.

I wouldnt deign to draw any attention to that other idiocy, I just report it.
Heh!
ta-daaaa
Rebecca, you obviously need help try googling for dyslexia groups and societies, they will be your best source for information.

Have you actually been diagnosed as dyslexic if not then you need to see a Dr for a correct diagnosis.

Good luck

RATTER
And as if by magic...........

Corrr, you're very good Octavius ;-)
I work next to 2 people with Dyslexia in accountancy. One has Masters Degree the other is starting one in couple o months. They get around the problem. Helps that they are doing numerical career I suppose. I cant spell and ofetn see words as being different to what they actually say, which is probably Dyslexia, byut have letters after my name and am goosd at what i do for a job. It aint held me back. You just have to do a suitable carrer.
I think my suspicions were aroused originally as my friend also has a degree and has managed a successful career (non-numerical), but as you said B00, it varies by degrees.

One wonders whether there are deeper issues than perceived dyslexia which causes someone to run out of a job which under the Disability Act would provide Employment protection rights, and to be kicked out of a Learn Direct course for having GCSEs? I have never heard of that.

I fear that Rebecca may be suffering from very low self esteem, possibly caused/exasperated (by dyslexia) but she should talk (one to one) with someone who really knows their stuff.
Dyslexia doesn't negate your ability to use the English Language really well (as rebecca's question will show). Perhaps Rebecca got someone to type this for her whilst she dictated it, or spent a really long time with a spell checker, etc!!! I know someone with dyslexia who managed to do exceedingly well and achieved A grades in English at school.

However, having been closely associated with a dyslexic child it dents their confidence and self esteem to a great degree. A new job might have flustered and worried Rebecca which is why she failed.

Most dyslexics who do well in their working life have the full backing of their family and learn coping strategies. In fact many dyslexics are brilliant at lateral thinking. It is therefore possible for people with dyslexia to hide it and if schools or parents are not on the ball, children can go out into the working world without it ever being picked up.

Rebecca, I agree with Octavious that you would do well to seek help from someone who really understands the problem. Try looking up Dislexia help online, or speak to your GP or optometrist.

Thank you very much for all your answers,Especially you BOO, That website looks very good :-) I wrote my question out on word and then did a spell check. The thing with me is I Know how to word something well, however when it comes to the spellings I really struggle; Hence I dont like texting. when I was five my dad thought that I was dyslexic, however my mum said that I was just being Lazy and Naughty. I only found out that I was dyslexic on my last year at college and I had three lesions with a dyslexic teacher but then my course finished. I think I was just feeling really emotional yesterday I let things get to me, and I was thinking how different things would be if I had of had extra help when I was at school instead of being made to feel stupid. I have got a really low self esteem, due to a bad school life and the way that some men have treated me. I just want a job that I can do really well at and make my mum and dad proud of me.
Dont we all Rebecca!
But what you should really look for is a job that gives you a challenge and fulfilment. It is you who have got to do the job, not your mum and dad, so I am sure if you find a job that you are happy in they will be proud.

I think you should maybe contact the dyslexia number I gave above and see how they can help with the dyslexia issue, then after that concentrate on your self esteem (lots of options available) and finding a job. We all have fences that we need to climb over in our lives and the strongest people are those that get up after a stumble and keep on going. Good luck.
