* allegations which were started 'as a joke'? ^
Increasingly, it appears so.

Leon Brittain was not blessed with the most pre-possessing of physical appearences, and as a society, we are always keen to associate a 'look' with a 'behaviour'.

To put it bluntly - because Lord Brittan could be perceived as someone with dubious secrets based on his appearance, it is a short leap (well, more of a hop in media terms!) to make the assumption that he 'must be weird'.

Of course, this is utterly unfair, but once that genie is out of the bottle, people will take the story and run with it, even though no credible evidence is produced to support it.

It's a modern equivalent of McCarthyism, and we must beware of seeing abusers around every corner, simply because - as in this case - their unwillingness to accept going bald, and a somewhat basic assemblage of facial features tags them as a pevert.

I hope that all involved hang their heads in shame, that an apparently innocent man went to his death in the midst of having his reputation comprehensively destroyed by a combination of the individual absence of a sense of humour, which was then compounded by the national absence of a sense of right and wrong.
Leon Brittan's name has been cropping up for decades with regard to abuse of boys. He was on the Mary Moss list compiled in the early 1980s.
The police (and others) have gone on fishing expeditions seeking alleged victims yo come forward. That is a dangerous practice as it can encourage fantasists, as it appears to have done in this case. But there was a suspicion in the first place before this man came forward. He is discredited, but that does not prove that the initial allegations were true or false.

And perhaps the tragedy here will be that allegations based on truth will now be more readily dismissed as the utterings of fantastists.
Gromit - //He is discredited, but that does not prove that the initial allegations were true or false.//

That is true, and as sandy advises, genuine investigations are forever tainted because of the meddling of people with too much time on their hands and an inversely proportional belief in their own importance.
.

I wonder if the DPP Alison Saunders wrote to Lady Brittan and said
'the system is meant to work like this'

as she did to me after I whined about an acquittal in 8 mins ( I was saying that the case should neva have been brought - she might have taken it as a complain that the jury should have taken longer )
Sandy - I am not sure cases like

Victim : I was raped !
Defendant - No you werent ! by me at least

with NO other evidence - should ever come to court
having been involved in one as part player [ cleaner or handbag carrier ]

More like Lord Brittan could be perceived as someone with dubious secrets based on his lost paedophile dossier

"I don't remember a paedophile dossier''
"I handed the paedophile dossier over"
But will Tom Watson apologies now?
Ric.Ror

The rumours about Brittan pre-date this fantasist. Watson's evidence for the existance of a Westminster Paedophile Ring were not based solely on this discredited witness. So Watson has nothing to apolgise for.
Watson is a horrible nasty little piece of work, and hes shown that yet again here....
its just a shame that Cor blimey has given him a job that allows him to gob off and get this sort of publicty...obviously has short man syndrome
Many years ago I got my ex husband a copy of a book based on the TV comedy show Who Dares Wins - one page had a picture of Leon Britten and the word paedophile at the top - it must have been before 1985
Two Pizza's Watson has a lot to anserw for.

Using pedophilia as a political weapon is deplorable and detracts from the real problems we have in Society wit genuine pedophiles.

The Nonse finder General should be forced to publically apologize, but I doubt Corbyn has the bolloks to do this especially as he is actually Watson puppet.
Geoffrey Dickens MP (Tory) was also pilloried and ignored. It is how these disgusting people get away with it so long.

I cannot figure why people would want to shoot the messenger, and want paedophile crimes to be swept under the carpet. Perhaps the apologists on this thread will enlighten me of their motives?
I imagine that as long as politicians are paedophiles, it will be a political weapon. Any reason why it shouldn't? (I suppose I should be asking that queston of politicans and bishops.)

You'd nearly think there's an unwritten rule among the great and the good that such things aren't mentioned. If there had been romours circulating about Cyril Smith, for example, his political opponents could have given them a wider airing and used them to capture his seat. I wonder why they didn't?
