12 year old son tells me that in DT (Design and Technology) at school next week he will be taught how to sew and iron

What the ***???

This is the education system which also taught him sex education at 7 years old

Whatever happened to the days when boys did woodwork and metalwork and girls did home economics and needlework?

Good, being able to sew and iron will help him find a nice girlfriend, or join the armed forces.
Boys and girls do all the subjects covered by D & T - it's not the 1950's.
Before Home Economics it was Domestic Science, and prior to that plain cookery and needlework.

Consigned to the dark ages, equal opportunities for everyone.

My grandson irons his own Army Cadet uniform and won't let anyone else touch it. My son also does the family ironing as he is far better at it than his wife.

As an aside I'm going on a drystane dyking course in a couple of weeks.
This question was posed here in a spirit of irony, wasn't it ?
Maggie ........... there is a whole world of comment that could be made about "dykeing" ;o)
I know builder but I'll refrain from commenting!!
:o)
My Father only knew how to sew, darn and iron through his army training - excellent life skills.

'being able to sew and iron will help him find a nice girlfriend'

Yeah right, cos that's 2 of the top qualities females generally look for in a male of course!

Sewing and ironing is womans work
It would also enable a single man to look presentable at a job interview or similar.

Why do men need to know how to sew and iron?

They don't because their wife/girlfriend does it for them
Most of the ironing in my house was done by my Dad. Move on already joeluke.
...as is cooking and cleaning. Long live the brotherhood!
Never come across a single man or a widower Joe?

No need, his mother could do it for him
'Sarge is it alright if my mother enlists too - she does all my sewing and pressing'

Yeah righto.
It`s not a modern phenomenon. In the 1970s we did woodwork and metalwork at school and the boys did home economics.
Quite right 237 - I did metalwork and woodwork as did my daughters.
My oh's dad won't allow his mum to do the ironing, my eldest brother was the same (both ex forces).
