Each pair of rhyming lines contains both a definition (one or more words) and a mixture or reversal of the letters (beginning at the beginning or ending at the end of a word in the clue) of the two answers indicated by the clue numbers (in the correct order).
Both indications of the first answer precede both indications of the second. In each case either definition or letter-mixture may come first.

slaney - if you are stlll around - 8d says 2 letters but it's 4? i have ROA? so ROAN seems the likely answer - but where's the defn?
For reference, I've posted a checklist of where the letter mixtures start/end on the Azed Commentaty page of my website, www.thefrogman.net; on the comments page there is also a correspondence regarding roan deer and roan antelopes, which may - or may not - be enlightening!
