This story is truly horrific. This poor man was literally eaten alive by a starving dog, and yet the two women responsible only got a sentence of one year in jail. What would have happened if the dog had killed 2 neighbours,.....2 years in jail ?

I've just been listening to this on the news and some apologist was saying how awful it is not only for the family of the poor man (agreed), but the families of the two girls imprisoned. If said two girls hadn't neglected the dog in the first place, this would probably never have happened. He was left alone in hot sun all day without food and water! These two girls probably don't think it was their fault at all, typical !
It was them be irresponsible pet owners that allowed it to happen. They didn't stand there and watch it. They left a hungry dog in the garden with no water or shade. I don't suppose they expected something like that to happen.

I am 'not' defending them...

Well said Jordy.
Two women of nearly 30 years old who choose to own a dog and then not attend to it's needs consequently endangering anyone it encountered and resulting the poor man's death whilst they went to a bar-b-que. I have no sympathy for them whatsoever, I have plenty for the dog and even more for it's poor victim, but people really do need to take responsibility for themselves and not own dogs unless they are prepared to look after them and train them accordingly.

Ummmmm...I realise that you are not defending these two daft women.....I can't see how anybody could, given the evidence. But they are guilty of allowing the situation to happen in the first place. I understand that if they had been present at the time, they could very well have been facing manslaughter charges.
Hmm ... Norris Green

I know that neighbourhood.

are we sure it was a dog and not one of their children?

Jordy...I am a dog lover and cases like this appall me.
The judge could have only sentenced them to a max of two years.

Then the law is an ass !

What can you do though? Even well looked after dogs can turn.
Lol Zeuhl. It is appalling leaving an animal unattended for that length of time without food and water and shelter. The two women were responsible for keeping the dog and they should take the consequences.Maybe 2 years is the max for the judge to give which is deplorable when you consider how the poor old man died. Hope the dog is dead.

Its a big place DB !
The dead man's brother made a dignified speech
the sentences wouldnt bring his brother back,
and the parents of the two women had lost two children for whenever

and no one was the winner.
Just read the full story on Mail online, the poor bloody dog hadn't eaten for 45 hours and it was reduced to eating cigarette butts! This is disgusting, no wonder the smell of meat cooking drove it mad. At least this pair of vile women have been banned for life. What a terrible death for this poor man.
If the law says 2 years then they should get 2 years, not some airy fairy judge give them 1 year when the stupid women will be out in a couple of weeks.
/Even well looked after dogs can turn./

That's true ummm, though some breeds seem more predisposed than others

And some breeds present more of a threat than others if they do turn

I imagine a cross breed of Presa Canario and Bull Mastiff would be a big and powerful animal
It is beyond my comprehension how some owners of dogs can be so cruel and uncaring, its sickening. And that poor neighbour only opened his door to let out the smell of his cooking, and so the starving dog went in for the kill. What an horrific tragedy.
No Baza - lots of crimes go round in units of no imprisonment, 7 y and 14y. and it is established since god knows when that the upper limit in the Act is NOT a sentencing guide.
