Im looking to get a small parrot or parakeet for a pet. Im pretty experienced with birds but only things cockatiels, budgies, red rumps, kakarikis, splendids, bourkes etc.

I'd like something that would be different......colourful and easy to keep as a pet so i was looking at a conure or something.

I would have no probs at getting a hand reared baby but does anyone have any opinions on what species to get.

Thanks

Hi there: Jump right in and get an African Grey parrot. Quick story, ours escaped twice, and we managed to get him back ... the third time, zippo. Anyway, they are great company, troubles are few but here goes ... they 'take' to either gals or blokes, rarely both! Try and get a red tail, they make better talkers, they are moody, cheeky and loveable – all in the same half-hour! Never feed them lettuce or avocados, disaster awaits. The experts will tell you this and that ... but they virtually eat what you do, including toast, biscuits, fruit of every description ... ours loved granadillas, not sure if you get them in the UK, easy to come by here in South Africa, don't try and peel it, give it whole and watch the skins fly! Great company, learn to talk only from a year old ... while they can live to be 70 years young! Enjoy your parrot endeavours!
I'd like to start by saying...Parrots to do not '' virtually eat what you do, including toast, biscuits,''
I'm sure if you have experience of owning smaller birds you will know the importance of a varied and healthy diet.

Conures are lovely birds but can be loud, what about something like a Green Cheeked Conure or Caiques are lovely playful little birds, especially the Black Headed ones. It all depends on how much space, time, money you have oh and how much noise you can deal with lol

Good post Lisa.
I have the Hannes McCaw as you see in the pic .very easy to train good talker and tame .also a good watch dog . I know when anyone is approaching the house . She is not huge probably twice the size of the cockatiel . She says lots but first thing in the morning when I take her cover off she says good morning and that's the only time she says that . Eats lots of different things and fun to see her with spaghetti .
I have a Yellow Faced Amazon. She is totally blind but really good company. She only says Hello and Hello Darling but is really happy and loves music. She dances up and down her perch and shouts hello when music is playing. She loves egg custard and cake. She eats parrot food and a little fruit. When I first got her, from a rescue centre, she had fits so I spoke to the parrot zoo not far from where I live and they told me to feed her chicken, egg or cheese twice a week so I do and she has been fine since.
