christening gift

What's the nicest christening gift you've received for yourself or your child, or you yourself given or heard of? My sister is running out of time to find one for a baby boy. I'll say thankyou on her behalf, as she isn't a member, but I'll send her this link and I know she'll be grateful. Thanks!

I alwas think something for them to keep is the best thing. For a boy you can alwas get a tankard, St. christopher and necklace or something he can collect more of as he gets older. Plate/dish and mug in a collectable range. Or even pewter. I think boys are harder than girls. Our youngest grandson is getting christened in May and I am having trouble. Our other grandson we got a St. Christopher necklace to keep. and the four granddaughters a gold baby braclet.

I usually buy some nice photo albums (Boots are currently 3 for 2) and wrap them, and write on the tag "something for you to treasure...and for your mam to show your girlfriends when you're older!" I think it's a good gift, because there'll be lots of birhday parties & holiday snaps to come, they will get put away (in your gift), but always brought back out for years to come, never eventually put in a charity bag like some ornament type stuff.

My son received a number of money boxes - all of which are lovely (silver train, silver pig, Winnie the Pooh one) but he doesn't get that much pocket money!! We also received a number of 'first tooth' boxes - again which are lovely. Also had a lovely photo album which was like a baby book, but just with the plastic window leaves to put pictures in - I have just started filling this in with my 3 year old with pictures he likes and it is his. My mum (always one to be different) bought him some antique spoons as an investment. We were given a children's book of bible stories which was a really lovely present (and have only received one from 2 christenings). Another favourite was a Winnie the Pooh glass musical snow-ball from John Lewis. Also a silver tube for keeping the birth certificate in, with teddy bears holding it at each end. I once gave one of the Bear Factory bears with a spoken message inside.

Try www.baby-gifts.co.uk for inspiration on personal gifts - some lovely ideas even if your sister hasn't time to order from there.

I gave my goddaugter a golden necklace with a crucifix.

Would not do that for all christenings, though (or the baby will end up with five of them), i think that's a godparents thing.

For 'normal' christenings I like cutlery with name engraved.

I usually buy books as a christening present, something like a boxed set of the Chronicles of Narnia, something classic that the child will (hopefully) enjoy when they get older.

My sister has asked me to thank you all for you wonderful ideas; she's overwhelmed with your response and is now feeling quite reassured that she will get through this with flying colours! I asked if she wanted to single anyone out for me to thank, but she enjoyed all your replies immensely. (Personally I fell for the time capsule, and will remember to remember that for my next christening invitation.)

Keep'em coming, she will look in again!
