Nick Griffin not allowed to visit Sellafield

http://news.bbc.co.uk...d/cumbria/8341438.stm

BNP leader Nick Griffin has been refused permission to visit the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria on security grounds.

Mr Griffin said he wanted to visit the site, which sits within his North West European Parliament constituency, because he is pro-nuclear power.

But Sellafield Limited, which operates the site, said it was concerned about security and possible demonstrations.

Mr Griffin said the decision prevented him from doing his job as an MEP.

The BNP leader sits on the European Parliament's environment committee and in that capacity asked to visit Sellafield.

But the nuclear plant refused, claiming it could cause "an unnecessary distraction" and be a safety risk.

Should he be allowed in and if so, who should fund the required extra security? Oneeyedvic (Wed 11:13 04/Nov/09)

(Wed 11:25 04/Nov/09) He should be allowed and the EU should pay for any extra security, but I'm surprised they need any, the place is ringed with steel, let him in and shut the bleedin gate, end of.

(Wed 12:11 04/Nov/09) The media/public opinion has already decided he's a monster beyond anything a dangerous dose of radioactivity can do. Probably with good reason, but I was remarking on the media's ability to create exagerrated versions of heroes and villains as they see fit.

sorry, it was a bit cryptic for a wednesday morning!

(Wed 12:13 04/Nov/09) Why doesn't he go without informing the press, etc.? If no-one knew that he was there then they couldn't protest/demonstrate.

good idea but of course as a politician he doesn't go places because they are worth visiting, he goes there to be seen going there, and ideally to be heard saying something while he's there.

(Wed 13:55 04/Nov/09) Can one imagine a Labour, Conservative or liberal politician being banned, because they may attract protesters?

If the BNP protesters are the source of the trouble, then it is these trouble making and violent communists that need to be controlled, thus protecting a legitimate politician, to enable him to carry out his lawful duties.

(Wed 14:07 04/Nov/09) Isn't Sellafield Ltd a private company?

Does anyone have the 'right' to go there? It's at their discretion surely? What if wanted to come to the premises of my business for 'fact finding'? Would I be expected to welcome him in?

It's not as if he's being banned from Trafalgar Square or his local fire station.

If Sellafield can't cope with a few anti-BNP protesters I would worry about their security systems. Should be a good exercise for them, what do their security people do all day to stop getting bored?

(Wed 16:05 04/Nov/09) BNP protesters are communists??? Where did THAT cone from?

I say 'let him visit'. He should be shown aroung the nuclear reprosessing facility...without any protective clothing.

And as a souvenir, he could be given a bag of radium..,and be told that they're 'Sella-sweets'.

(Wed 18:43 04/Nov/09) From The Daily Mash today...

“BNP lunatic Nick Griffin has been banned from the Sellafield nuclear plant amid fears he could make Britain's electricity all racist and homophobic.

Manager Roy Hobbs said: "Most people know that uranium is a highly unstable element. What they don't know is that it's also very impressionable. All it would take is for Mr Griffin to utter the phrase 'white power' and these weak-minded atoms would quickly turn large sections of the National Grid into the electro-magnetic equivalent of a Nuremberg rally."

He added: "This thuggish, extreme right-wing electricity would then refuse to enter the homes of people from ethnic minorities in the mistaken belief that they will use it to make more babies.”
