Come fly with me

More than 46 million airline seats will be cut over the next three months as the aviation industry is engulfed by the economic crisis.
The latest figures compiled by OAG (Official Airline Guide) show that demand for travel is shrinking throughout the world. Carriers plan to operate half a million fewer flights between October and December compared with the same period last year.

So, recession is good for the planet. The guessing game now is which airline will will go bust next?

This fact seems to fly in the face of Stansted Airport who will be increasing the number of flight by an extra 70,000 to 264,000 a year and London City airport from 80,000 to 120,000

These take years of planning and what was a good idea at the application stages may not be so now.

From Barney's link:

However, it is unclear how quickly the airport will grow. Stansted’s passenger numbers have fallen slightly in the past year to about 22.5 million because of the drop in demand for European budget flights. Ryanair is grounding 16 of its Stansted-based aircraft this winter. The airport will also have a new restriction on the number of private jets that it can accommodate.

Monarch looks on shaky ground, and may be next for the chop.

No doubt some airline operators will go to the wall

I have mixed feelings about this .

On one hand fewer flights must be good for the planet .
On the other hand , the inevitable job cut is not good news for employees ; of which my daughter is one - who earns her living at 30k plus feet , up there .

This site is for asking questions and giving answers to people you do not know and have never met. I use it purely as a diversion and for entertainment.

I do not use it to post more questions than you or to bask in your reflected glory.

If the Tories are so against air travel and intend to build fast rail lines to the North I hope they will impose a levy on airlines to pay for this super train highway. They get away scott free at the moment.
