Europe adopts anthem - Tory gets upset
Beethoven's Ode to Joy, the final movement of his choral ninth symphony, will be used to open the parliament after each election and for formal sittings where heads of state are present. Timothy Kirkhope, a Conservative member of the European parliament, said he would refuse to stand for the anthem at sessions. "Ode to Joy may be a very nice tune, but so is Jingle Bells and like Jingle Bells it heralds a fantasy - the fantasy that the EU is good for you," he said. "But unlike Jingle Bells, it will damage your national sovereignty and the right to control your own destiny. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/pol itics/3167928/Sovereignty-threat-after-Europea n-parliament-adopts-flag-and-anthem.html The anthem and flag have been used since 1985. Will it really damage us?

To add to your consideration, here are the (translated) words of Friederich Schiller that Beethoven ues for the final movement of his Choral Symphony (No 9).
I leave to make up your own mind.
Oh friends, not these tones!
Let us sing more cheerful songs, And more joyful. Joy! Joy!
Joy, beautiful spark of God Daughter of Elysium,
We enter drunk with fire,
Heavenly one, your sanctuary!
Your magic binds again
What custom sternly parts.
All men become brothers,
Where your gentle wing rests.
Whoever has had the great fortune To be a friend's friend, Whoever has won a devoted wife, Join in our jubilation! Indeed, whoever can call even one soul, His own on this earth!
And whoever was never able to, must creep Tearfully away from this band!
Joy all creatures drink At the breasts of nature;
All good, all bad Follow her trail of roses.
Kisses she gave us, and wine, A friend, proven in death; Pleasure was to the worm given, And the cherub stands before God.
Glad, as His suns fly Through the Heaven's glorious design,
Run, brothers, your race, Joyful, as a hero to victory.
Be embraced, millions! This kiss for the whole world! Brothers, above the starry canopy Must a loving Father dwell.
Do you bow down, millions? Do you sense the Creator, world?
Seek Him beyond the starry canopy! Beyond the stars must He dwell.
Be embraced, you millions! This kiss for the whole world! Brothers, beyond the star-canopy
Must a loving Father dwell. Be embraced, This kiss for the whole world!
Joy, beautiful spark of God, Daughter of Elysium, Joy, beautiful spark of God

Yet another "sit on the fence" question from Gromit.
Have others noticed that he never volunteers an opinion himself, until he has weighed up the response to his question.
May I suggest an anthem for Europe and that is, Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker", They have had Britain's nuts in a grip for far too long, it's now becoming increasingly more and more painful.

Different approaches AOG. You offer a rant that others react to or against, I ask for opinions, and wait to read what others have to say.
I usually offer my opinions in my answers not my questions.
What you call sitting on the fence, geezer calls anti-British rhetoric. I am pleased to say you are both wrong.

I love the fact that Britains problems are being laid so squarely at the door of the EU.
Especially when the current economic disaster started in the US and not the EU.
Had it started in the EU I can scarcely imagine the bile that would have spilled out - yet criticism of our economic ties to the US have been decidedly muted.
Yet again it seems to me people are very loud when they find evidence to suit their prejudices and very quiet when they are contradicted.
Remind me ho many disasterous wars the EU has gotten us involved in Geezer

AOG, do not be fooled by Gromit's apparent nutrality in the questions. Can you not see the sycophantic criticism of everything British in his delivery:
"Will it really damage us?" perlease! pass the sick bucket!
It's not a question it's a sdtatement disguised as one. I'll translate shall I:
"Why is a Tory, someone who dares to be in the wrong party, daring to criticise the magnificence of the EU? Everyone knows that the British are terrosist oppressors or the world just look at the empire. How dare they moan when a more advanced society conquers them using their own beauracrats, how dare they oppose a society that has pavement cafes. The British should be rolling over to be ruled by the more enlightened Europeans."
What happenned to you? Gromit what makes you hate us so much?
