Burglary? how bad is it?

Our Judiciary seem to think it's not at all bad and tend not to use sentencing powers they already have.
I tend to think it is a personal violation and should be treated as such. Some people take it better than others, some have to move they feel so violated. So how bad is it? Do you think Judges/beaks would be more severe if they had some scrote going through their undie draw or crapping on the lounge carpet? Do you think it should always be custodial?

I never said jail is a holiday, Vic - and nor should it be. If people don't want to be imprisoned, they shouldn't commit crime, and until those who scream 'unfair' come up with a viable solution that means these people will no longer violate and steal the property of others, we have no option but to take them out of circulation. I have no sympathy whatsoever for them.

Of course, the other thing to mention R1, is that with a mandatory life sentence after 3 burglaries, well you may as well go equipped with a sawn off. After all, what is the worse that is going to happen?

Even on your first burglary, you may as well go armed with a knife.

Leave no witness and you may not be caught.

I am thinking about opening a training school. Burglars Direct.

Looking at the market and facilities promised there would be a lot demand. Especially when experts are predicting higher level of unemployment and rising price of living.

When you can not buy, steal it.

naomi - my point about the prisons wasn't to you but to another poster who made mention of 'holiday camps'.

Going off topic slightly, have you watched the film Crash?

oneeyedvic- if you think that these criminals should be care for hugged and rehabilitated. Let them serve a sentence in your house then.

Wake up and smell the coffee. we all work hard for our homes and our possessions why should they be any different.

I am not saying that they should serve a sentence, so why would they serve it in my house?

Are you saying that you don't want them to be rehabilitated?

why should they be any different.

Because presumably you had parents who loved you, taught you right from wrong and you had a good education.

If you are dragged up by yourself, living in filth and squalor with no positive role models, what do you think will happen?

I'm a political lefty/liberal, but my liberal principles flew out of the window when I was burgled a few years back.

If you'd asked me at the time, I would've been completely in favour of hand-chopping.

Seriously.

I personally think that burglarly should be treated as a much more serious crime than (say) pickpocketing, or theft from shops.

It's a personal violation, and you never quite feel the same about shutting your front door after you've been burgled.

Yeah...I hate burglars, and I don't care what happens to them.

Wow...this is what it feel like to be a Daily Mail reader. It's not that bad...!

Gosh SP, easy there! I know exactly what you mean. :o)

Vic, I'm not sure if I've seen that film or not. Why do you ask?

naomi - its a really good film (it won 3 Oscars) - and it shows how people's behaviour is influenced by the people they are around. It's central plot is about racism, but I am afraid I am terrible at describing plots. If you get a chance, buy it or rent it.

Oh my, SP has gone over to the dark side ;-)

Just remember though if you catch a burglar in your house and knock the hell out of him/her YOU WILL GET A CUSTODIAL SENTENCE! Cant have a poor old burglar getting beaten up by a $cummy law abiding householder, can we?

Can you supply any proof of that?

oneeyedvic- in response to your various comments. Have you ever been a victim of Crime. Yes of course I have.

The last instance was vandalism of my car about 3 months ago. It cost around £250 to repair and didn't go through insurance.

I have also had my flat burgled (though at the time (about 15 years ago) I had pretty much nothing and very little was stolen (less than £500)).

I have had my bike stolen (both an expensive bicycle and a motorbike).

Did I like it? No, of course not. Do I want to see them punished? Yes.

Would I prefer to see the rehabilitated so that they didn't do it again? Most definitely.

goodness, ned, the Saudis only cut off the hands of thieves, you want to shoot them? Thieves who fear being shot will of course go armed themselves, so you have to hope any that you catch will be slow on the draw.

In America and South Africa if you in someones elses property, you are fair game. Thats the way it should be!
