Has anyone on here heard about the earthquake in Indonesia in which over 5000 people have died so far ? and also the trouble in East Timor where Australian and New Zealand troops have had to be deployed to help to keep the peace and stop gangs from killing innocent people ?

...em.. yes.

Both stories are all over the news here in Ireland - assume same in UK?

Yes since Staurday morning - first time I saw the story was on BBC at around 7.30am Saturday morning - a news flash came on.
If I miss the News for whatever reason I always go to teletext just to check out what's going on (BBC page 102), so even though I've been busy and out and about this Bank Holiday weekend I have kept up to date on what's happening.
Yes.....it's yet another international tragedy which we'll hear very little about because there are few if any British involved.
It seems to be much less important an issue than some "superstar's" broken metatarsal.
I remember being told in school that as far as news coverage goes, 500 chinese lives equal one Uk life, and that figure moves to thousands for Africans

sad thing was...I had Radio 1 on in the van I was in Sunday afternoon.

Their main story - Jolie and Pitt having a sprog

The news about the earthquake came second, and came across as unimportant

Just one of the many reasons why I hardly listen to it anymore

could it be that people are fedup hearing about death sad as it is, i agree Mickey Rooneys foot isnt important or david and victoria peckerheads party.maybe people are concerned with the problems facing britain brought on by tony bush and cherie's hair.

Earthquake still pretty big news here Dolly, though possibly not in the Daily Star. East Timor is in the quality papers, but I shouldn't think it's in the tabloids.

It's so sad what a selfish world this has become due no doubt to commercialism .If it doesn't sell papers etc. then forget it ! Never become immune to real disasters it may happen to us one day and then who is going to bother about us ? What goes around comes around ,God I sound morbid I know but I truly am sick of me,me,me,me first generation .
