Donald Trump says that sportsmen who make public personal protests during the playing of the American national anthem should be fired. For the BBC, the news isn't the protest, or even that Trump retaliated, no, the news is spun in such a way that it is that his patriotic statements have been 'condemned by various sportsmen'. Or have I got it all wrong?

Not sure what spin the BBC are attempting but Trump is bang on. If they hate their country so much find another, end of.
what are they protesting about anyway? They are all on a squillion bucks a week.
Since when is criticising a country at all tantamount to hating it?

Also, I don't see any meaningful spin. Here is Trump, at a time when he has Hurricane damage, Healthcare debates in the summit, a Tax Reform and Infrastructure bill in the offing, and the ever-increasing tensions with North Korea and Iran, taking time away from such minutiae to focus on the important problem of sportsmen who want to protest about things they see as wrong with the country. Rightly or wrongly, they have that right, and it's both surprising and entirely predictable that Trump would rather talk about this than about actually important stuff.

It's all over twitter and has been for days.
Did Trump spend the whole rally yacking on about the NFL?
He spent a surprisingly large amount of time yapping about it. The BBC article stated that "Trump knows his audience", which is certainly fair comment -- he's done a good job of whipping up crowds, although oddly they seem happy to forget that he whips them up with false promises that he had no intention of keeping (remember the "Lock her up!" chants from the campaign, that he actively encouraged, and were directed at his opponent Hillary Clinton? Disgusting -- and tolerated anyway).
Biased BBC reporting?!?

It's been all over everywhere and the world and his wife have been having their say.
Trump is a buffoon and meddling where he has no business and no understanding.....again!
That's a really long winded way of typing 'no' jim.
Yes, you've got it wrong. The news is the
latest news. What happened yesterday is no longer news once something more recent has happened.

Complex, I know, but media have operated on this basis for several centuries.
Personally I thing the NFL players should find another way of protesting.
So they have blacklisted this player because he would not kneel to a piece of music, but instead would rather employ several players with drug, driving and violence offensives!! Mmmmm
Talbot -- I don't see that he should be commenting on it at all.
It does seem to be the thing in USA to play their National Anthem at every opportunity and expect everybody to actively participate, let alone respectfully observe it.

I'm not sure what the response would be if the FA suddenly insisted that our National Anthem was played before every football match up and down the country.

The football players are there to play football.
By today this is old news, peaceful protest, :-)
I'm no royalist but I wouldn't do anything to disrespect a performance of the national anthem.

Today is going to be very interesting ... NFL normally sends me to sleep.
How often do you have to respectfully observe the National Anthem, though?

Surely not every single time you turn up for a day's work....?
Is that what happens in the USA?
It is in the NFL.

It's a very difficult song to get away from.
You may be too young to remember when The Queen was played at the end of cinema screenings, jth, but the response was a stampede for the exits when the first note sounded.
Paid patriotism apparantly.

But I will stick by my thoughts that another method of protest should be found, this method could backfire on them.
