I think they are as bad as each other, Talbot, and would agree that the unauthorised 'criminal' removal of statues is not something of which to approve.

But the objections, protests and demands for their removal is completely understandable.

The decision to remove the statue was by the local council. They are democratically elected every 4 years, and their policies are enacted. Last year they set up a Commission to look at two anachronistic statues in Charlottesville which are contenious with the local community. The Commission gave a report recomending the General Lee statue be relocated. After much costly legal battles, the coyncil voted to sell the statue.

There are local elections in November, where people who do not agree with that decision, can vote for different candidates. That is how local democracy works, not holding torch lit Klu Klux Clan meetings to intimidate the local community.

Only in a perfect democratic world, and one we do not have, if we did we would see an end to all street demos/riots etc.

If a democratic vote is taken and the outcome is an agreement for their removal, then 'yes' they should be removed......not pulled down by a howling mob.

However, he is known for much more than those words, Talbot, and any (are there many?) statues to him are put up for the things that united the country and not which divded them unlike Robert E Lee's statues.

Local democracy works wonderfully in the US and over here. There isn't really an alternative to it in a free country.
Those opposing the decision are anti-democratic, and want to ignore the majority of the local community, and impose their will instead.
