"Insulation on the building also failed tests and the Metropolitan Police will consider manslaughter charges."

No surprise there than.

> they did two sort of cladding, one less flammable than the other OK, so everything is flammable at a certain temperature, even rock, but as I said on another thread ... People talk about "cost-cutting", "it would only have cost £5000 more to clad the building in a better material", etc. but this misses the point. There is no way on earth that "flammable"...

No surprise there then!

On the news this morning the councils said they were misled.

Ummm...as I have said on another thread this morning, this scandal could be huge, if it is proved that safety checks and inspections ignored the facts.
if they are considering charges then I assume that the regulations were not adhered to as originally claimed by the firm that did the refurb. The building must have had a fire certificate so that process needs looking at too.

On the photo included in the BBC link that I have just posted, the building looks a bit odd.

The upper floors are clearly badly damaged by fire, but the lower floors look unscathed ?
are they saying then that the whole thing was a massive exercise in ignoring the regulations? If so then the purps deserve to be jailed.
Mikey - the fire didn't start on the groundfloor. It traveled up from where it started.
Mikey, //The upper floors are clearly badly damaged by fire, but the lower floors look unscathed ?//

I imagine that's because the fire didn't start on the ground floor - and flames go upwards rather than down.
It's the other side of the tower from where the fire started. Flames went sideways but mainly up, so this side is less scorched on the lower floors.

Yes Ummm...I forgot that !
I really feel for those people that unnecessarily lost their lives, do you think the council in every Town / City should stipulate as part of the agreement, each Flat should house a Fire Extinguisher, the person's said it was his Machine that caught fire, do you think this could have been stopped if he had had one, I don't know if he did or not.
TWR - I think it's the manufacturers of the cladding that are to blame. They mislead the council.
Yes Ummmm, I have followed the issue with sadness, but do you not think, it could have helped?
Why has there rarely, if ever, been a fireproof centre stairwell that would allow residents to flee the fire on foot?

Cost, I suppose.

Question Author
TWR.........I would like to think that the provision of fire extinguishers would be looked at in the Enquiry.

Common sense would say that there should be one on every landing in a building without a sprinkler system.
Question Author
Chrissa....I can guarantee that at least one of the reasons why this disaster happened was because of money.....it always does.
TWR - not at 1am when most people are asleep.
The fire started on the 4th floor, he had time to go out to warn others Ummmm, I'm sure he could have attended the fire, I would have.
But, TWR, it could already be too late by then.
Question Author
It would appear that the residents in the lower flats mostly, if not all, got out OK. The problem for the poor people on the upper floors is that the fire spread so quickly, that there wasn't enough time to them to escape.

Many of them may have died from smoke inhalation, probably somewhere on the central stair well.....the only stair well, and the only means of escape from the building.
