Surely it is places like shopping centres and football grounds, places with high volumes of people they will target? Buck house is already well gaurded as it the houses of parliament.

Personally, I give my utmost respect to our troops at this moment in time.

If Betty needs guarding, I can't think of a better body of men to do it.
security has been breached before at Buckingham Palace as well as downing street, we can't have these nut jobs getting in either place, by all means guard these buildings as well as stadiums and stations, shopping centres too. I would happily see them around any place.
This has got me to thinking, if Buckingham Palace or No 10 was attacked, I wonder what measures would swiftly be brought in, so as to curb this Islamic terrorism?

Absolutely nothing against the troops Mickey, you know I would not hear a thing against them.

But I would like some protection too given I pay a fair bit for them.
seems a sensible idea for the immediate future..we ALL need to remain alert...I for one will be avoiding any public gatherings or occasions for the foreseeable, paricularly anything involving military such as camp open days..Edinburgh Tattoo...Edinburgh Festival in general...opening of new parliament will be a security nightmare...

I think you know the answer to that AOG.

And it would not be the lack of action we see today.
You're kidding right? The Houses of Parliament were attacked the other week!

I'm off to Twickenham this Saturday for the rugby Premiership final. Really looking forward to it ...
YMB....please don't get me wrong....I appreciate that the Troops are there to protect us all. Even in my little Welsh backwater, I feel less safe than I did a couple of days ago.

I spent a wonderful day yesterday, visiting Tewkesbury and its Abbey, and we had a pub lunch, and most people seem to be talking about Manchester.
AOG....out of curiosity, what measures do YOU think we should be taking ? ( a serious, and well-meant question )
Put the troops in densely populated areas ,unless they are for foreign visitors to see.
Maybe they have some specific intelligence about a threat to Buckingham Palace. It would need a lot of soldiers to cover every shopping centre, station, concert hall, sports venue so resources have to be prioritised
*** foreign visitors .......... Tourists .
Anne....yes I agree, but do we have enough military to make much a huge difference ?

Also, while we are on the subject, now that we have less Police Officers than we had a few years ago ( about 20,000 less )....do we have enough Police to protect us as well as we might expect ?
Surely taking swift and severe military action against IS would be wholly justified. They're killing our kids for God's sake.
I don't quite know what deploying troops on the streets is going to do - Buildings/ venues , yes .
It's impossible to stop some nutter driving a vehicle into a crowd , for example .

Are these troops going to be deployed indefinitely ?
Otherwise all the bad guys will do is lie low and wait
Baz....I fear that you may be right.
*I am not* making light of the situation, but 9,000 troops will be deployed in what I heard on the news last night as "Operation Tempura" & as I struggled to think of a valid reason for the name, I neglected to actually look it up. Mea culpa.

It is of course "Operation Temperer" & is a sad state of affairs to be in but necessary, obviously. The "elite" places mentioned are undoubtedly at the top of the terrorists' "hit list" but they'll be aware of the difficulty - even under "normal" security - of getting close, so they choose more vulnerable people to attack - "ordinary" lives shattered strikes home more immediately with everyone, I think.

I'm sure that uncountable numbers of people will feel safer because of the presence of troops right across the country.
I’m very pleased that troops are being deployed. I do, however, feel that rather than taking positive action against those intent on harming us, we’re simply attempting to safeguard the population from attack.

Mikey, the government has today promised extra funding for this.

Whilst the sight of these heavily armed Troops will make a lot of people feel safer in reality I'm not sure of the practicality of it.
Terrorists don't wear a uniform or have a placard stating their intentions so don't stand out from the crowd, and as regarding armed Troops as a deterrent, remember the terrorists are suicide bombers they want to die that is their intention.
