But this new announcement by the Tories is at odds with what Mrs May and her Ministers have been saying for days.

strong and stable, mikey! Stable as in "change my mind every few days". It's like the budget all over again.

She denies it?

Well, I guess it's not a u-turn then.

Nothing to see here.

The Tories always deny there is any u-turn. even when it obvious that it has just happened. As you say, jno, just like the Budget !

lol Kromo !
"Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others."
- Groucho May
How do you tell if a Tory prime minister's lying?

You just wait a few days, as long as it's the run-up to an election.

Question Author
The Party mouthpiece, in the shape of the Daily Telegraph, agrees that this IS a U-turn.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/22/general-election-2017-latest-news-polls-analysis/

Gideon, for the Evening Standard says that its an u-turn.

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/theresa-may-in-uturn-on-social-care-after-facing-tory-backlash-a3545026.html

Even the Holy of Holies, the Daily Mail says its an U-turn !

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4529486/Tories-fire-social-care-postcode-lottery.html

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, etc. etc !

While we're on the subject, let's not ignore our dear PM's attempt to throw money at the controversy in the hope that it would go away:

This woman is an embarrassment.
We are in politics here, lest we forget, where to admit a mistake is seen as a weakness. Sad fact perhaps, but the best leaders tough it out and admit nothing.
If it was labour or any other party it would be a 'u' turn .

It's a tory 're-consideration ' - so it's not .
Understand
Question Author
Garaman...."tough it out and admit nothing"

In plain English, "just keep on lying"
Yes, Mikey, if you have made a mistake just keep on lying. I wasn't trying to dress it up, that is by all accounts what makes a successful leader.
Well, 'what makes' wasn't quite right, 'essential to being' might be better.
Question Author
Graraman.....in my book, for successful read duplicitous.

2 major U-turns, in a matter of a few weeks.......seems like its a combination of arrogance and bad planning.
I think what Dave is trying to say is 'Yer but no but yer but no...'.
Question Author
Bit like this then Dougie :::::

In plain English, "just keep on lying"

Yep - just like all manifestos - very good toilet paper that they make - all parties. Get yerself in and then wreak havoc

By the way, Mikey, got my spread bet on in the family betting shop and also had a Jelberts this afternoon.
It seems like someone thought that they had do much support that they could inflict whatever c wrap they wished. Then saw the backlash. Democracy is about doing what the majority want: politicians can't treat it with disdain every time; there are limits even if they're very wide ones. Just most of the time.
cons to win by a majority of 100 -120 @ 6-1, worth a fiver on that.
