depends how you term wealthy.
someone on 50k might be deemed wealthy, but has a mortgage, several children and a partner who stays at home.
the free school meals have been a godsend for us - my daughter has them at the moment. As she is at school all day and cant come home for lunch because i am not there, it's very re-assuring to know that she's getting offered a hot meal. And of course, the peer pressure means that she at least tries new things. It also takes some pressure off me to provide a packed lunch. If school meals are to be withdrawn for infants it would be a shame from a personal POV. However, i expect i willjust pay for them as you suggested. i'm not sure how many parents would do the same though
kids should have to line up and present evidence of their parents' earnings before they get anything free.
The scheme as it stands has shown an improvement in performance in a lot of pupils, making it worthwhile in my opinion.

Maybe they could build in an 'opt out' scheme so those who wish to pay can do so.

Hope this helps at all, these are the one's not termed as wealthy.

Children whose parents receive Family Income Support.

The children of parents receiving Income Based Job-Seekers Allowance ///

/// Any student whose parents receive Child Tax Credit but do not recieve Working Tax Credit and whose annual family income is less than £16,190 as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs (2016 - these values are changed annually). ///

/// Those children who are supported by Part VI of the Immigration & Asylum Act 1999 ///

/// Children who are being cared for by guardians who receive Pension Credit (under the ‘Guarantee Credit Element’). ///
from what i heard they will be offering all primary school children breakfasts instead, not sure that is such a good idea, that should be down to the parents to get them off to a good start to the day.

Surely you are not naive enough into believing that some would?
Many schools have breakfast clubs and they are a boon for parents who start work early, but on the whole I thin breakfast is better at home with parents and/or siblings.
I'm not naive, but I do know those who would happily pay.

I can't doubt the veracity of the wealthy, I only know a few.

It is also a parents responsibility to make sue that their children have a midday lunch.

If a person cannot afford to feed their own children, they should not bring them into the world.

That's how many of the wealthy hold onto their wealth and it is not by throwing their money away unnecessarily.
//If a person cannot afford to feed their own children, they should not bring them into the world.//
What happens if the family's circumstances change?... Sickness, redundancy, death of one parent ...
That was my next point Melv, thank you.

The people I know with money, hard earned mostly are more than happy to spend it on their family and are generally generous too.

We obviously move in different circles.
//If a person cannot afford to feed their own children, they should not bring them into the world. //

What happens if the parent goes through a break up and finds it difficulty to get a job?
Such sweeping statements should be thought out loud before committing and writing down as it only looks bad for the author!!
I don't quite know why schools don't simply assume responsibility for their charges 24/7 and simply allow the parents to visit them from time to time.
You mean like boarding schools NJ?
Good idea NJ - that would allow the 'leftie teachers' to complete the indoctrination more completely ... ;-)
like anything means tested, there will be people just one side of the line who will probably be those missing out
