After the rigged election, Turkey had a total of 47,000 people detained, including 10,700 police and 7,4000 members of the military because they were suspected of participating in last year's failed coup. Thousands of people have lost their jobs across Turkey's public institutions, including teachers and civil servants, and opposition media outlets have been closed down, and he is now rounding up thousands more http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-39716631
Is this bye-bye Turkey as we knew it?

The problem is, if you take part in a coup you are putting your life on the line. Especially if said coup fails.

And that is not just in Turkey.
did we know Turkey after all, what we know of it is the sunshine and tourist spots, but the deep down nitty gritty that is Turkish politics, life may be beyond us.
It'll be fine once they are in the EU!
they wont be allowed in the EU surely with Erdogan in charge .
Watch that space.

emmie; //did we know Turkey after all,//
I've never visited the country, but I know something from a distance and of its history viz. after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire it was turned into a liberal secular state by Attaturk, but that is all about to be altered by Erdogan turning it into a fascist Islamic dictatorship.
Of the several problems for the West, under Obama's watch, NATO has nuclear weapons on Turkish soil and Germany has many factories and commercial interests there.
the one and only time we visited was sailing from Greece to Turkey, the day we spent there was lovely, had great time. As to its politics, isn't this hardliner going to kill off the massive tourist trade, not to mention many of its people going missing and being incarcerated. as to the weapons can they be moved elsewhere ?

There were fears nearly a year ago, https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jul/17/turkey-coup-attempt-raises-fears-over-safety-of-us-nuclear-stockpile I think those fears should be increasing under Erdogan's new regime.
Turks have been taking part in large demonstrations from day one of Erdogan's so called victory ... you must have seen these demonstrations on our MSM?
Have you been there lately? I have a very good friend who is a training captain at Turkish Airlines who lives in Istanbul. I think that you might find that what the Press say and the realilty are two different things.
