Ok it's not confirmed yet, but looks highly likely there's been yet another atrocity in the name of Islam. Just what is the appeal of Islam, and why aren't such atrocities putting people off it? It would be good to get answers other than the usual "these terrorises aren't true Muslims", "they are only a small minority" etc.

I don't understand the appeal of islam or indeed any religion. Islam though is going through its equivalent of the spanish inquisition. Devotees want to kill or convert, so called "moderates" give at least tacit approval. I fear for humankind when such importance is assigned to which set of fairy tales one adheres to. Huge advances have been made in the world...

Huge advances have been made in the world in so many areas, yet we struggle to cleanse the phage of religion from the minds of the weak.
Not easy to answer.. Were people put off Protestantism/Catholicism when the troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1970s-90s?
What attracts people to Islam?

The poor are attracted to Islam because of its 'zakat'.

This is where 2.5% of all assets are redistributed to the needy.

This was a huge difference compared to the aristocratic pre-Muhummad Mecca, but is still applicable today.

The religious were attracted to the absolute "monotheism" of Islam, and the Koran's strict commands seemed straight forward enough - providing a much needed law structure.

At least in America, Muslims convert by playing on the class structures and social structures in society. Specifically, the Nation of Islam converts in the prisons, where many African-Americans find purpose.

The Nation of Islam believes that there is a white and Christian conspiracy to keep down all blacks, which is ridiculous. It advocates racism and intolerance.

The Nation of Islam portrays Africans as a blessed people; but they are in every religion, just like every other man and woman of any background.

The main reason for conversion is ignorance of one's own religion, ignorance of Islam, disillusionment with society (which is no reason to leave a religion, especially one that teaches the meek will inherit the earth), and false truth.

Could you answer the second bit, sp?

''why aren't such atrocities putting people off it?''
-Talbot-

How do we know whether it is or isn't?

Where are the figures supporting the growth or decline of conversions?

We need to discount those who are born into Muslim families for now, because their adherence to Islam is a forgone conclusion.

So - in the past ten years we would need to establish a baseline for comparison. Has the number of converts increased, decreased or remained stable?

Only then does the second part of the question become answerable.

There's also another very unpleasant question that needs to be answered honestly by our politicians...

Muslims have been living in large numbers Europe for decades.

Specifically what has happened to our relation with Islamic states to produce the situation we are in now?

Serious question - do you think that our politicians and arms dealers have screwed up?

I'm talking about the support of certain terrorist groups, who we called 'freedom fighters' back in the late 80s.

...in Afghanistan for instance?
Before Mohammed reared his ugly head, what religion did the Arab peoples follow?
ironically, Judaism and Christianity were popular pre mohammed.
Before Islam an assortment of tribal gods were worshipped. Mohammed based Islam predominately on Judaism with a bit of Christianity thrown in. A relation of his wife was very well versed in both, and that was the main source of Mohammed's information. Much of the 'science' he included was gleaned from the ancient Greeks - including some of their errors.
The religions of the Arabian peninsular were Judaism and Christian and Mohammed demanded they either convert to his invented religion (or be beheaded), leave the peninsular, or pay him and his followers a tax.
Nothing has changed then, except the peninsular is now Europe.
the OP doesnt make sense so I dont see why I should

they could be terroristen jobbies or stockbrokers trying to short the market - I refer to the bomb at Borussia Dortmund which was let off by er an investor ( investor in Islam?)
and is now facing 30 attempted murder charges .....

[ shorting is a bit complicated for AB- you borrow shares in B Dort from someone who has them when they are 30/- and then you sell them at 30/- when they go down to lets say 25/- ( as a result of a bomb or something ) you rebuy them at 25/- and hand them back to the guy you have borrowed them from and pocket the 5/- per share gross capital profit]

yeah I agree why dont we just line all those dark muslims against a wall - or walls - shoot them all. Much easier than charging them and trying them -after all the juries might acquit !
// Were people put off Protestantism/Catholicism // [in the 1970s

no but english roman catholics strongly resented being associated with irish terrorism.....which was a constant objectionable theme then
i can't see the appeal if Islam, or any religion for that matter. The terrorists we hear about are fanatics who cause mayhem and murder on our streets and indeed in their homelands, if you watch the nightly news.
If they are trying to convert more people to the cause by its terrorist activities i don't think it will work.
It supposed to be a religion of peace, but i don't see that at all.
"the OP doesnt make sense so I dont see why I should " - when did you ever make sense PP?
I'll answer that - never!
It DOES put people off. You only have to look at some of the thousands of comments on here and elsewhere :-)
Many of the people who commit these acts are converts to the religion, many are ex-criminals or society misfits. They are probably naturally drawn to thoughts of revenge against society.
As for the bulk of other Moslems, well they are no more likely to be put off their religion I'd imagine than any other religionists in the face of atrocities carried out in the name of their religion. I don't think and Ulster Protestants for example abandoned their religion during the troubles because of the actions on the Protestant Action Force, and the Waco siege in the US did not seem to put people off Christianity generally. The reason for that is that people don't assocate themselves with those who commit such acts. But for non-Moslems, non-Protestants, non-Christians or indeed non-reglious people it may well have a negative affect as indicated at the start.
veronk; here's one answer to the "small minority" plea;
Khandro, exactly
And, surprise surprise, it turns out last night's killer was a convicted criminal
