Isn't it unfair to blame Brexit?

We've had racists amongst us for decades. They've never needed an excuse before, so why now?

Do you think this a real issue, or fake news or whatever?

I don't know if there was a spike or not, but I do know we ought not be swayed from doing what is needed for fear that some might act poorly using it as an excuse.
I think we're hearing a lot of spin.
don;t honestly know, could be a spike, or spin..
No spike in hate crime round here.
I recall some prominent Twitter users urging people to report anything and everything to the police.
No, they created a dedicated phone line to report hate crime, and the snowflakes are reporting anything and everything as a hate crime because they are getting upset on behalf of other people.

Anyone can log on to a police website and report a hate crime its the actual arrests and charges that make the difference.

\\A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said the force defined a hate incident as “any incident that is perceived by the victim or any other person to be racist, homophobic, transphobic or due to a person’s religion, belief, gender identity or disability”.//

by the victim, so the police dont decide then the victim does.

But these figures need to be taken with a fistful of salt. There is something wrong with the way we report and measure hate crimes in this country. The numbers do not necessarily speak to any objective spread of hate in modern Britain. On the contrary, what the BBC calls an ‘epidemic’ is a product of the authorities redefining racism and prejudice to such an extent that almost any unpleasant encounter between people of different backgrounds can now be recorded as ‘hatred’.

\\Already, two infamous post–Brexit ‘incidents’ have been debunked. It was widely claimed, for instance, that an attack on a tapas bar in Lewisham, south London, was a hate crime; actually, police say it was a burglary. A photo of four boneheads in Newcastle holding a banner saying ‘Stop Immigration, Start Repatriation’ was widely shared as evidence of xenophobia. But Geordies have pointed out that those idiots have been holding up that banner every weekend for ages, long before Brexit.//

So an argument between two people of different races, creeds, colours religions or sexuality CAN be classed as a hate crime and not just an argument.

Dave.
I have seen too many similar reports for it not to be substantially true.
It helps your cause Eddie. ;o)
A crime is a crime. Where does hate come into anything?
(Apart from Blair-speak, that is)
The only increase in "hate crimes" I have seen would appear to have come from the Remoaners, ohh and The French.
Well that's how I perceive it.............so it must be true (^_*)
Well if it did most of it came from the SGB lobbing their toys out of the pram!
EDDIE51 from Full Fact.\\Yes, the number of hate crimes recorded by the police in July 2016 was 41% higher in July 2016 than in July 2015. There was a sharp increase immediately after the EU referendum.//

so recorded crimes, how many prosecutions were there.?

Dave.
Webbo, the question is, was there a rise in reported hate crime after the referendum result ?. The sources I quoted all agree that there was.
Of course, not every reported crime results in a prosecution, that is as true for 'hate crime' as it is for other types of crime.

EDDIE51, so they could be made up crimes with out any prosecutions, as I pointed out earlier, anyone can report a hate crime, some have been proven to be fake.

Dave.
Looks like the reported hate crime actually did result in a corresponding increase in prosecutions.

That is the CPS saying that NOT a newspaper!!
So if a white person insults another white person by calling them thick it's OK. If the same white person then calls a black person thick then can that is a hate crime. It's a ridiculous law that is open to abuse by the usual trouble makers who go looking for offence on behalf of others.
It is a 'hate crime' if the insult is due to ethnicity, skin colour, age, gender, religion or disability.
When Paddy tells you a joke about the thick Irish you all laugh ... you then join in and tell one ... you have committed a hate crime.

Yes, this is where we are.
