China may protest but they are the rogues state here. I think it's refreshing that Trump has the bottle to engage Taiwan again.

I think he might have waited till he's actually in office before implementing his foreign policy. Well, we'll see who comes out top in a war between the USA and China.
I agree with you Tora
One thing is for sure, it's going to be interesting with this person in the White House
I think he is going to earn the title of "Foot in mouth president"
One awaits to see what the outcome is, with interest. It seems that the province has ceded from the rest. Had China felt they should stop their right to be independent then they should have acted a long time ago. Clearly they decided that being heavy handed was not in their interest and so should accept the reality of an independent Taiwan.
Why would he "talk" to a tiny island that the US has not recognised for four decades? Putting into jeopardy the relations between his country and the massive market that is, China.

He is either a buffoon, or just likes to stick it to the diplomatic powers that be.
Taiwan is a highly prosperous and what is more free country. It's time we stood up to the Chinese and recognised it as such - officially
I can't see Britain doing it if they want Hinkley Point built.
The Chinese claim they'd break off diplomatic relations with any country that recognises Taiwan. Yes I agree that we probably won't risk it but in many ways Taiwan does pretty well without UN membership etc.
we'll see how Trump goes when he actually gets the job. He might decide Beijing has its uses after all, even if he's not as chummy as he is with Moscow.
I predict the 'chummy with Moscow' thing will cool very quickly
I wonder if he is aware he is not the President yet ?
well he can talk to whomever he likes ....

whether it is in the long term interests of the Land of the Free remains to be seen
I suspect this is a very calculated move.

He is President elect so not actually speaking for the USA at the moment but it does test the water and so will enable his administration to work out the way forward much easier.

Personally i applaud the idea. The notion that there will be a war is sheer fantacy and yet more scaremongering from those on the left.
