A lot of people on here, especially our right-wingers, decried Obama's "interference" in the referendum. Can I presume that those same people will also say something similar, now that the Trump Ogre is agreeing with them ?

of course they will! You can never accuse Brexiteers of having double standards.

Yes. Except now it is a counter to the last interference. And that Obama is likely to have more influence here than Trump.

jno....it remains to be seen !
I think Obama is the President of the United States ... a slightly more influential position than a real estate developer.

Not the same thing really is it?
Actually you clearly did not listen to a word he said.

He did not back Brexit , he said it was his opinion and also very clearly stated that it was not a recommendation.

So very different indeed.
//Actually you clearly did not listen to a word he said. //

No surprise there.
That's called weasel words, though.

Obviously he's free to express his opinion, in the same way that Obama did.

"The Republican said he was not making a "recommendation" but his "feeling" was that the UK should vote to sever ties with the EU in its 23 June referendum"

He quite clearly favours a Brexit.
brekkie's on the table. Back in a bit.
Mikey, he's voicing an opinion. He's not 'backing' anything.
It's not the same at all and he clearly stated it was his opinion. He also said why - immigration.

And closed clearly stating it was not a recommendation.

How is that weasel words, how much clearer do you want it?

And he didnt come to the UK to spout it either.
Question Author
But when Obama "expressed an opinion" there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth amongst our Brexit crowd.
Question Author
"Backs" was the BBC's word, not mine but I still remain that he supports Brexit.......couldn't be clearer.
In spite of opinions being expressed from across the pond and our own politicians trying to persuade us to vote this way or that,we really cannot be sure which way is the most sensible option for our future.
Obama did a lot more than 'just an opinion' and yo uknow it.

Ah, the left wing BBC, no surprise there. But that is no excuse for you to spread it is it?

Go to sky and listen to what he says, you can hear the words come out of his mount.
Obama didn't simply express an opinion. He made a concerted effort to encourage the people of this country to vote 'In'. His was not a one-liner!
Question Author
I agree Naomi....Trump is very good at "one-liners" .....in fact that is all he does....no reasoned arguments, or policies.....just inane one-liners.
It's possible to say that you aren't making a recommendation, while you actually are making one.

Trump was asked a question, and he answered it. I don't think that's a bad thing. I disagree with his opinion on this, of course, but he has the right to express it and come out in favour, if you like, of one position or the other. But the language of Brexit supporters over Obama (or, recently, on anyone in the UK having an opinion on Trump at all, from some on this site), suggests that they were very unkeen on anyone from outside the UK expressing an opinion on the upcoming referendum. The question is whether this extends to those expressing opinions in their favour also. The answer, it seems, is "no".

Mikey, whatever you think of him, that isn't the point.
