//A YORKSHIRE animal sanctuary has revealed details of a barbaric “sport” in which kittens are “colour coded” with marker pens and then thrown to packs of savage dogs.//

Does anyone know anything about this disgusting ‘sport’, and is it confined to Bradford? I’ve never heard of it.

daren't click on the link ... i've never heard of such a thing but the person who thought it up needs help urgently

The link doesn't depict the 'sport' in action - just the kittens being bathed. Have a look. Their rescuers named them Smurf and Shrek because of the colours they were painted. Poor little things.
This doesn't surprise me in the least.

The real animals are the ones putting on this betting extravaganza for the delectation of the discerning punter.

I wonder how they would feel if it were their children being colour coded and thrown to baying dogs. In fact I suspect in some 'far flung hell hole' that actually happens. Human life has no meaning or regard in some places I the world.
Seen it on facebook. Absolute disgrace.
These people don't need help. They need to be colour coded and thrown to some lions that haven't eaten for a month!
This is disgusting. Have the Police investigated this yet ?

Mikey, According to the link the police rescued the cats so I presume they're investigating.
Well, lets hope they pull their fingers out on this issue.
It sounds made up, it's so OTT.

Thought I'd read about coloured kittens a couple of days ago. No mention of dogs then though.
The so-called sport of hare coursing was cruel and its to the credit of Parliament that it was made illegal in 2004. This business of the kittens sounds suspiciously similar.
I live in Bradford and have been unable to discover anything about this.
Svejk - it's not made up. The rescue centre for cats was on the news this morning with the still stained kittens.

I don't imagine it's common knowledge - well not until now.
From today's local paper:-
Miss Lloyd also said, despite other media reports, that she had "absolutely no evidence to support" a theory that the cats had been coloured-in to be used in dog-baiting, so punters knew which kitten they were betting on to survive.
This is the lady in charge of the cat rescue centre talking about he two coloured kittens handed in.
One of the comments left below t'article mentioned local elections and blind eyes being turned.
I wonder what he means.
I hadn't heard of this until you posted Naomi. But animal cruelty is all too common in Britain. There is an on-going story of dozens of cats being maimed and killed, somewhere near London I believe, but I can't recall exactly where.
I think some people who raced greyhounds would 'blood' their young dogs by letting them kill a cat. They thought that would make them run harder when chasing the hare. We're not so far from the days of bear bating. Cruel and barbaric.
Animal cruelty is not all too common. Yes it exists, just as Child cruelty does, and it should be stopped. But no need to castigate the UK as a whole, we are a country of animal lovers!
If dannyk's post is correct then this one has, thankfully, been blown out of proportion. But it's easy enough to believe, which is sad enough on its own, and anyway there are plenty of other examples of hideous animal cruelty so that one less is just a small mercy.

Current laws tend to treat animals effectively as objects; current sentencing guidelines appear to imply a maximum sentence of six months in prison. I think this is far too low; it's long past time for the law to take animal cruelty, and animal death, far more seriously.
