//// Yet by winning the show with such grace, humour and dignity, Nadiya has done more to further the cause of Asian women — and men — than countless government policies, think-tanks, initiatives and councils put together have achieved in the past half-century. ///

What is your question?
The Mail has found a Muslim who is not a terrorist - they are enjoying what they think of as a novelty.
Government campaigns (from both Conservative and Labour) to promote diversity do not work. AOG, You yourself are a prime example that they don't.

A popular candidate in a high rating show, who goes on to win, is going to have a positive feel to it.
If that candidate is a headscarf wearing Asian Woman, then that will have a positive effect on peoples' perception of that demographic. No Government campaign could invent such a deserving and likeable role model.
For once the hyperbole seems deserved, even if its effect will only be fleeting.
An excellent set of points Gromit.
Was it the producer or whatever of the show who last week basically admitted that the ethnic mix was probably jigged to increase the chances of somebody like her winning ?
Baz,

I think the producer said that being an excellent baker wasn't the sole criteria for choosing the candidates. They did not admit it was skewed to favour ethnic candidates. They chose candidates for their entertainment value and ratings pulling power. And it seems to have worked.
bazwillrun - //... somebody like her ... //

Do you mean - the best contestant in the competition?
If that's the truth then white heterosexual Brits must be lacking in the 'entertaining' department. Most shows that contain a panel made up the general public tend to over-represent the minority demographic.
Integration at last, albeit cakes made with ghee
Yes, surely they could have found a dozen white, Christian and English bakers?

Booldawg,

White hetrosexuals need not fear.

There were 12 finalists
7 were British white hetrosexual
1 was a European white hetrosexual

Of the other 4,
2 were British asian, 1 of whom was homosexual
1 was hilipino
1 was of West Indian origin (I assume)

6 men
6 women.
