Freaked Out About Spiders . . . .

I don't normally mind spiders much. If there is one in the house I will leave it alone, unless it encroaches on something I need to use, in which case I usually catch the spider in a glass and put it outside. But my experience today was something very different. In August last year we put down pond liner covered in medium sized pebbles around the shrubs in the garden. Today I walked over the pebbles to spray the rose bushes. To my absolute horror every step I took caused about a dozen medium-sized spiders to emerge from the pebbles and run around my feet. Every step produced at least a dozen of them! I was totally freaked. It took seven footsteps before I was able to get off the pebbles and onto the grass - never again will I walk on those pebbles! Can anyone suggest any explanation for this? I have walked on those pebbles many times before, but have never seen them. Why are they there now? And why so many of them? OMG where did they come from and will they come into the house?

They might be wolf spiders, pebbles are the perfect environment for them, warmed by the sun and dry places to hide in. You might get the odd one indoors but I've never known a mass invasion.
