On the news it states some people are still missing from the shootings in Sousse. How can that be? Surely they would either be ok,dead or in hospital. Is there a possibility someone has hidden with an injury and consequently died and they have not found them? or tried to escape into the sea and drowned?

If a couple are not accounted for and were holidaying alone then the Tunisian authorities can't just assume they are dead. They could have, hopefully, gone on an excursion.
just means they haven't matched up the bodies to the people known to have been there, I suppose. Maybe some of them were daytrippers not actually staying at any of the hotels so they haven't been identified yet.

ok so you are staying in the hotel that got hit - only that day you go on a trip - would you not phone home to let people know you are ok?
They probably just haven`t identified them yet. Some people don`t take ID to the beach either - they leave valuables in the room safe and carry the minimum of stuff with them.

so basically anyone deemed 'missing' by their loved ones are probably dead?
Either dead or severely injured. The government will not confirm the identity of any body until they 100% sure they have put the right name to the body.
Lot's of trips leave very early and you don't know what level of communication they have.
I would think that a lot of the 'victims' were in swimming costumes and perhaps became separated from their belongings as they tried to escape. I think I saw somewhere that the Tunisian authorities are asking for dental records to confirm identities. They are being urged to speed up the process by the FO. What a nightmare for the relatives waiting for news.

it has been reported that the FO, having set up a relatives hotline, leave calls unanswered for long periods of time. if they cannot (cannot be bothered to) answer it, what was the point of setting it up?
I think jno has the nub of it.

The other problem is, of course, that people may know that their relation has gone to Tunisia, but may not know the precise location/hotel. And if those relatives haven't read newspapers or dont have their phones on they may not know what has happened and may not know that people back home desperately want to get in touch.

My parents trot off abroad quite regularly and it is only in recent years since my grandparents need their support that I get furnished with precise itineraries or hotel details. Before I only had a rough idea.
