I am not a fan of speed cameras or radar. I preferred the method of pursuit speed checks. The longer the pursuit (over 3/10 mile) the less chance the driver can claim ignorance of the limit and could be looking at a Without Due care ticket as well for lack of mirror observation.
If, however, the road has adquate camera warning signs and signs showing the statutory speed limit then TOUGH. Perhaps more cases of WDC if the driver cannot read the signs as well.
I'm in the don't speed camp.

Drive at a speed dictated by the road, then you won't have to look for signs or cameras.

sorry for duplicate post. PC froze on first post so I resent it. :-(

Sorry, but can't agree with Mamya's Post, a lot of roads with 30mph limits invite you to drive a lot faster than that.
Well if you can prove that 'invitation' in your mitigation, you should get off the fine.

Don't get me wrong, my Husband loved to drive at what he felt was the correct speed and not what the signs said, my attitude was 'If you get fined etc, don't whinge'.
How, Baldric? How does a road invite you to speed?
Mamy has it correct here ! We get the same people, making the same childish excuses, every time this topic comes up on AB.

Why do these daft speeding drivers complain when they are caught ?

They are presumably not denying that they were speeding, just the "sneaky" way that they got caught !

So if a Policeman was hiding behind a bush and witnesses someone burgling a house, it would be the Policeman's fault would it, for not waving at the nice burglar frst ?

They have no defence whatsoever. They should stop whinging ! They should just pay up and shut.
“…a lot of roads with 30mph limits invite you to drive a lot faster than that.”

Sorry, Baldric, but that’s rather like saying a lot of shops with goods on open shelves invite you to steal them.

I am frequently intrigued by articles such as this. The drivers who complain are effectively saying “I only obey the speed limits when I know I’m not going to get caught”. Imagine a burglar suggesting it was unfair of the police to hide in the bushes as he broke into a house:

“There should have been clear warnings that they would apprehend me as I went about my unlawful business. They should have remained visible and worn hi-viz jackets, then I might not have committed the crime. I never break into houses when there is a police officer standing outside”.

You’d think he was barmy. And you’d be right.

Really, I haven't seen any excuses in this thread!
Wow, mikey, that's spookey !!!

er...er...
Mush...I would give New Judge BA here if I were you ! Plain common sense to me !

Ummmm, a lot of 30 mph roads are wide, straight sparsely developed on the outskirts of towns, it would be easy for the unwary to get carried away if not paying attention.
Ok the camera is 'hidden' - what about the sensors ( lines ) across the road ?

For the Record Your Honour, I have a Squeaky Clean Licence and maximum No Claims despite driving a car that will hit 60 in under 7 seconds and top 155 mph.
Yes...very spooky NJ ! Great Minds think alike. What a pity everybody else can't see the common sense in what we are saying.

There is dangerous section of the M4, going through Port Talbot, that I use almost every day. It has been 50mph for 40 years that I know of, with two static cameras. Earlier this year, they were replaced by an average speed limit, with weeks of visible warnings before switch-on. You can't fool an average speed camera !

But, even now, 2 months after it was switched on, 100's of people are still being caught every week. Given that the vast majority of people, outside the main summer holidays at least, will be regulars and locals, it amazing how many stupid drivers are being caught. And most of them are trying every excuse in the book while they shouldn't be fined and have 3 points on their licences.

A fool and his money are soon parted....maybe his licence as well !
Yeah...we're all probably guilty of creeping up in speed but that doesn't mean the road invites us to.

I've driven on empty motorways and still paid heed to the speedometer.

I don't speed because A) I don't want a ticket and B) I'd like to improve my chances of surviving a crash.
They have no complaint really, even if they have been cambushed.
