Tom Conti to vote Conservative for the first time. Let's hope others follow. His article sums it up for me!

Good article - and good for him!

Out of the frying pan into the fire. Now if he'd joined UKIP.....
Hallelujah he's seen the light! Excellent article.
Is that the same Tom Conti, lifelong Labour supporter who was going to stand for London Mayor as a Conservative in 2008?
People often support one party in local government and another in national government. I know Labour voters who wouldn’t dream of voting for a Labour District council. Idealism fades into oblivion when reality rears its ugly head.
and again last year

"Lifelong" seems to be a lie. I hope someone is reporting this to the authorities?
//For 40 years I supported Labour….. However, some time in the last 15 years I began to find that ‘Socialism’ was a religion..//

He’s not lying. He said his conversion began sometime in the last 15 years – long before he considered standing for election as Mayor.

I find various regencies on the internet about Conti being a 'staunch' Tory. I suspect the Mail article in your link is at best inaccurate, at worst, a pile of lies.

// Hampstead actor Tom Conti, a staunch Tory, said Mr Cameron’s comments were a direct result of the “champagne socialism label that Hampstead has enjoyed” but said it was “not applicable to Hampstead anymore. //
* regencies * is auto-correct nonsense.

Should be 'references'.
Naomi,

The impression given is that this is a recent conversion.

// Actor Tom Conti, pictured, has admitted that after 40 years he has abandoned Labour to embrace the Tories. //
He's bang on, Socialism is a religion, no basis in logic or common sense based on mythology and totally unworkable but if you do not "believe" you are the subject of vicious attacks from the devotees of this "religion". I also have experienced the way that the left can call us alll names wih impunity but any reciprocation causes organic peace porridge to be spat up the walls of Starbucks, Islington. The whole Ethos of Labour is envy rather than encouragement. Success must be punished not encouraged.
Gromit, he said he began wavering 15 years ago. That’s fair enough. By your own admission there are articles available on the internet confirming that he has become a Tory supporter and the article in the mail merely corroborates that. I don’t see your problem.
Shock horror a man changes his political allegiance.
What a load of old Nasty Party propaganda - Rupert Murdoch is absolutely running scared of a labour government really sorting out the Mucky Media.
read the article naomi, it describes people like gromit et al. He's a devotee so cannot comprehend how some one else is not and thus thrashes around like any religios follower.
Canary, I think it's spot on.
Tora,
I am not a Labour supporter. Never been a member, not voted Labour since 1983 (first and last time).
I seem to remember you saying you vote LibDem, Gromit. Will you be voting for them this time?
Basically, "some time in the last 15 years" really means "15 years ago." It's much the same as saying, "He's one of the top five goalkeepers in the world." Unless all five goalies are exactly the same as far as skill is concerned and this particular one is not even a little better than any of the others, the speaker would have said, "He's one of the top four (or whatever) goalkeepers in the world."
If Conti has been, effectively, a Tory for about that long...and a plan to stand as a Tory for London Mayor seven years ago would surely suggest so...in what conceivable way is he "a Labour luvvie"?"
