It really worries me that women may be offered jobs simply because they are women. Surely the right candidate should be offered the job regardless of their gender. I think this is a worrying trend

I didn't stop.

Equality would be nice. Too often a woman seems to get preferential treatment so good if someone does something about it.
'Gender equality' ensures there's a level playing field. It doesn't disadvantage men.
As always, where the USA leads, we follow.
In the US, businesses HAVE to ensure that a certain percentage of their workforce are women, a certain percentage are disabled and a certain percentage are black. Some businesses there struggle to find the best candidate for the job because of this law.
A friend of mine who has a small business in L.A. had a stroke of genius and employed a black, disabled woman.
Quite agree we should see more women on the front line, more women Oil Rig workers, more women digging up the roads, more women scaffolders etc, etc.

Perhaps then we could see more men carrying out those difficult air conditioned closed in all weather desk jobs, that women are forced to endure.

If it wasn't for female equality and dual mortgages, house values would not have doubled and the whole buy/restore/sell part of the economy would never have got off the ground. So we'd, none of us, be as well off as we are. Our spiralling London property values is what is drawing in all the oligarch money.

Practically doubling the workforce (starting in WWI/II) and therefore doubling GDP should be doing us a power of good too. Makes you wonder where all that wealth went.

Sturgeon does not advocate jobs for women "simply because they are women".
She is pledging gender equality in the jobs market.
More power to her elbow!
I have never encountered any gender inequality in the jobs market and I don't personally know any women who have.
We have a perfectly adequate Equal Opportunities Act
Gender equality is great but there is no accompanying legislation to ensure equality of jobs per household. Skilled professionals tend to marry each other, so you have some households with dual incomes, while others have none.

(This is kind of a false equivalence, since neither of the jobless couple is likely to possess the skills profile of either of the dual-income couple, so the state of one does not force the state of the other, iyswim).

Won't be long then before labour force a law that only rich can marry poor and visa versa.

Why limit that to labour , ygf - why not include the tories as well ?
Fairly sure that employers do not hang round Job Centres waiting to give jobs to women.
The right candidate should be offered the job regardless of gender and more often than not the right candidate is the male. Superior physical strength, less emotional, don't have to worry about pregnancy leave, more level headed. Saying that some women are very good at their jobs and this should be respected.
I'm not to sure why female equality should be a worrying trend. What a strange thing to say.
Since when is how "emotional" a candidate is,considered? If it ever is,it shouldn't be. In fact, there is no way of knowing of knowing, and things should not be assumed.
Now now, don't get all emotional on us Pasta !
Where I work, there is a man who takes time off if he so much as sneezes, whereas the women have soldiered on through bereavements, depression and severe family illnesses.
I know who I'd employ given the chance.
I think things are equal, I would hate to be given a job just because I am female. It should always be the best person for the job, no matter who they are.
