What one needs to ask about this report is, "how is it that a senior police officer can reveal such things on twitter"?

Why not? The children haven't been identified.
One of them was seventeen - hardly a child.

Old enough to drive.

/// Why not? The children haven't been identified. ///

That is irrelevant, a person in his position should not announce to all and sundry what takes place in the normal course of his employment as a senior police officer.

Had it been an ordinary constable he would haver been up before his seniors.

Police officers are not prohibited from using Twitter but why this account should be of interest on a mundane night shift I do not know.Perhaps he thought it was a good PR exercise after all the flak they have received recently. No ID was given by him of the children and he didn't contravene the O.S. Act. Usual worthless twitter IMO.

Police Officers and units do actually have official facebook and twitter accounts.
Do you remember seeing a promotion as what to do with your redundant windscreen tax disc holder ?A print out was devised by a Northern Constabulary which could be downloaded and emergency details were inserted on it to fit into the tax disc holder in case of an RTA.I believe that was promoted on an official police facebook account.

Thanks for that information retrocop, I can understand the importance of a twitter account in the circumstances that you have so expertly laid out, but I still fail to see why this senior officer deemed it necessary to revealed this information.
I follow several local police officers on Twitter and find it both useful (reports of road closures, accidents etc) and interesting. I also follow local ambulance and fire service accounts as well as councillors and politicians.
It's good to know what the public services are doing day to day.

The emergency services often do a 24 hour 'tweetathon' where particular officers or the 999 call handlers are followed for a day.

I can only agree with you.The information he gave was hardly earth shattering or ground breaking.Perhaps he should get out the office more often.I never saw an ACPO rank above Inspector on night duty years ago!!
Perhaps it made his day.The City of London police force is hardly the most exciting service in the UK.Mainly fraud investigation and policing Lord Mayor's banquets at Guildhall on state visit occasions.
I have more of a problem with the fact the tax payer is having to pay for cleaning up the mess of foreign parents.
Send them back to Romania, hopefully the parents will follow. A few less pickpockets on the street.
