Probably figured he was more suited there in the circumstances :-)
Er,
He had already defected. A bit stupid even for UKIP to suspend someone who has already left the party.

// One of the UK Independence Party’s most senior politicians has defected to the Conservatives in a major blow to Nigel Farage’s general election campaign.
Amjad Bashir, a Ukip MEP and the party’s leading Asian figure, told The Telegraph that Ukip had become a “party of ruthless self-interest” that was incapable of delivering a referendum on membership of the European Union.
In a damning broadside against his former colleagues, he described Ukip as “pretty amateur” and condemned its “ridiculous” lack of policies. He said the party was “delusional” about its chances of winning seats in May.
On Saturday night Ukip suspended Mr Bashir for alleged financial and employment irregularities. //
What a picture they present to the electorate don't they.First of all, those elected as MEP's,although happy to take the huge salary, turn their backs when the anthem is played. Then on Thursday nights Question time they had deputy Leader Paul Nuttall and I could hardly understand what he was talking about. Can't really see them having a great impact in May.

Grumpy...I agree with your last sentence but it won't be popular here, with AB's massed bands of UKIP supporters !

My point of this post wasn't to bring UKIP's continual lack of judgement in choosing its Members to the fore...there is ample evidence for this already.

But the irony of a high profile UKIP personality defecting back to the Conservative Party, the Party that he defected from to join UKIP ! Will he defect back to UKIP again next time, or will he choose a different Party altogether ?

Its all very confusing !
Can't wait to see Al. Murray and Nigel Farage going toe to toe in South Thanet, could be one of the most interesting elements of the forthcoming elections.
// a high profile UKIP personality //

I take an interest in this kind of thing, but I confess I had never heard of Amjad Bashir before this story broke.
Who?

Now if it had been King Abdullah, Harold Shipman, Peter Mandleson or Jimmy Savile, then that might have been news.
I joined Ukip and found they were delusional... other people seem to find that without going to the trouble of bouncing back and forth between parties.
Is Mikey delusional? A few months back he was ranting about Tories defecting to UKIP. Now he's ranting about UKIP defecting to Tories.

Bewildered of Tunbridge Wells.
//Will he defect back to UKIP again next time, or will he choose a different Party altogether ? //

Does anyone really care?
dead right naomi
people who are pondering voting for him might care.
There you go, rodders. Some people might care. We stand corrected. ;o)

/// Er,

Only after he had allegedly been found to have been up to something a little illegal. (now there's a surprise)

*** His decision to jump ship was announced shortly after Ukip said it had suspended Mr Bashir over a number of issues, including claims of interference with the candidate selection process. A spokesman from Ukip said evidence obtained by the party in its investigations had been forwarded to the
police. ***
AOG, don't let the facts get in the way of a good old Mikey rant. As soon as he sees the letters UKIP he is like one of Pavlov's dogs, slobbering at the chops.
I think he's not the only one who does that: only this is hostile slobber :-)
It is amusing to discover that a minor Labour figure defecting to UKIP is seized on but one of their own MEPs defecting and what is more branding his old party a vanity project for its leader is by contrast of no consequence :-)
// he would not be standing down in order to prompt a by-election. //

He should resign and a by-election should be held. He stood as a UKIP candidate. Everyone who voted for him is cheated by his defection.

Defending that decision, he said: "They voted for the policies that UKIP have, and those policies I can best deliver from the Conservative Party." //

Interesting how interchangeable the players consider UKIP and the Conservatives are. After the disappointment of the General Election, I expect we will see a lot more defections this way.
AOG,
He met Cameron on Friday to ask to join the Conservative ranks. Cameron said 'Yes', so he had effectively left UKIP at that moment.

The fact that UKIP pre-empted his Saturday news conference by suspending him shows just what a spiteful Party they are.

Yes like I said "he was suspended by UKIP before he asked to join the Tories".

*** A party source said Bashir had been aware for some time that he was being investigated and suggested that the suspension was the reason for his defection. “He knew he would be receiving that letter today,” the source
said. ***

*** Bashir had been informed he was facing investigations that include unanswered financial and employment questions, interference with Ukip candidate selection processes and a continued affiliation with Mujeeb Bhutto, a former Ukip spokesman who resigned from the party after it emerged he had been jailed for his part in a Pakistani kidnapping gang.***
