There has been a stand-off between those demanding that the personal exchange of messages between the former US president George W Bush and Blair in the run-up to the war be published, and those saying such a move would represent an unprecedented breach of confidence concerning one of the most sensitive episodes in British foreign relations.
"Any idea why they are withholding the Chilcot report?"

They're paid by the hour?

The dog ate the only hard copy so it'll have to be done over?

Former 'world leaders' will be exposed for not acting in a statesman like way by engineering regime change and massive contracts for organisations with deep pockets and a penchant for donating to political campaigns?

Who can say? We'll just have to be patient. Let's hope there's not a constant stream of important news stories all of a sudden that keep pushing this issue off the front pages and the rolling news.
I am not defending the delay, but basically everything is being delayed until after the election.

At work, we have a contract with the NHS that was supposed to begin in October. That got delayed until January, and we have just been told we cannot start until after May. My guess is it will commence in September.

The tragedy is, we will have to lay off a member of staff who was going to do the work, and it would have saved the NHS tens of thousands of pounds.

The Chilcott report (unless it is a whitewash) will undoubtedly be politically embarrasing fot Tory Bliar, and therefore Labour. Events of 12 years ago should influence the General Election. The the grinning idiot should be alliwed to get away with it.
I'll try that last sentence again...

The grinning idiot should not be allowed to get away with it.

If the report proves to critical of Blair I would have thought it to be in Cameron's best interests to have it published ASAP.
BlackadderV

It would. Which is why Cameron has no influence on the timetable of when this report can be published.

We have already enter the electioneering phase of the election. None of the policticos want anything as big as the Iraq inquiry to keep them off the telly.
Breaking news: Sir John Chilcot, chairman of Iraq war inquiry, to be summoned before the Commons foreign affairs committee to explain delay to report.
This stinks. Democracy, what democracy? Why has Blair got so much influence? I smell a Jeremy Heywood hand in this. Can't be seen blaming an ex PM and the present chief of Staff who is up to his elbows in blame for Woking with Blair. I hope the millions of people who marched against this disastrous war will take to the streets demanding this report before we elect our new representatives in May.

Gromit, it is hardly an Analogy with a government contact for your firm!! This is about a past prime minister sucking up to an American President who wanted to do something his father failed to do in 1990, finish off Sadam.
No matter what the Report says - anything from "It was all a bit of a mistake ..." to "This is being sent to the War Crimes Commission ..." - nothing will actually happen.

The warmongering leaders and their acolytes have all tefloned away to new lives, the dead remain dead, the situation remains the same - nothing will happen.
Tony Blair was Prime Minister at the time so obviously he takes most of the blame.

But remember, there was a major revolt on the Labour benches and 139 Labour MPs failed to vote for war. The Government could have been defeated, but the Conservatives vote for war (15 absentions). The Leader of the Opposition played a crucial part in the disastrous decision to go to war.
Chilcot is understood to have sent “Salmon letters” to those who were to be criticised to give them an opportunity to respond before the report’s publication, which will have led to further delays following objections from those criticised.

Salmon letters inform any party against whom an allegation may be made at an inquiry of these allegations and the evidence supporting them.
Let us have the MPs child sex abuse report published before the Election.
Oh dear its official the Chilcot report will not be published before the Election.
Sorry Mr Cameron.

tell me farrier, have you ever made any sort of sensible debating point on any sibject?
Question Author
surely the PM is the boss, can he not just order it published? If not directly then by the normal method of bauble dangling or withholding?
Jomlett you gave me my first laugh of the day with those 'salmon letters'.

Unfortunately this
"The Iraq Inquiry has published the final expenditure for the financial years 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13. The expenditure for 2013/14 is shown below. The total expenditure since 2009 is £9,016,500. "
is no laughing matter, nor is
"The letter reports substantial progress and confirms that individuals subject to criticism in the Inquiry's draft report are being given the opportunity to respond - a process known as Maxwellisation".

Claimed to be complete in less than a year.... now Public faith in officialdom drops even lower: makes me want a complete 'time and motion' study on all government activity, though of course I know no matter how costly that was it would never reveal the truth anyway.... and we readers would probably be all departed before it was completed.
