Are the Venetians being over sensitive, or do you agree and these hard plastic wheels should be banned not only on suit cases but also on children's scooters etc.

1. No, the Venetians are not being over sensitive.
2. No, these wheels should not be banned on suitcases nor children's scooters, etc.
Perhaps they should check what the wheels are in contact with that doesn't muffle the noise.

Not too far from me there is a motorway and the local MP got a change of surface to cut down on noise. They didn't bar the nearby houses and get them removed.
That said I see no reason why wheels could not be rubberised rather than hard.
No...they are not being overly sensitive. Our cities are noisy enough without adding to the cacaphony.

As for children's scooters...they should be banned completely...or put on a desert island. That's me in grumpy mode.
Those dratted Gondoliers don't half make a racket with their 'singing' ...

There will be job opportunities for fit young venetian porters providing a service to elderly tourists ... then they can carry the suitcase afterwards.

That is the cue for some young, enterprising Venetian to provide special wheel covers or something else of a suitable nature.
the story is (typically) unclear about whether the bags will be banned, or just trundling them.
What a waste of time and twaddle. Nearly as bad as the EU wanting to have standard performance on oven gloves, mentioned on R4 this morning and smacking of shades of the straight bananas fiasco.
Yeah ! prams and old people's buggies too !

Actually the old people's buggy problem can be solved by throwing the whole ENSEMBLE into the nearest canal - that'll stop them whining !

what is the Italian for : Madam you have a squeaky pram. here is a ticket for you and your little baby ?
"Signora avete una carrozzina cigolante, ovviamente non fatto qui in Italia . Ecco un biglietto per te e il tuo piccolo roditore di un bambino."
this would be better - Signora avete una carrozzina cigolante, ovviamente non fatto qui in Italia. Ecco una bella sanzione di € 400 per voi e il vostro piccolo roditore di un bambino
Personally I think that's a bit silly. Unless they are going to ban the cases, I would imagine if you've lugged a heavy case for a bit and it has wheels, the temptation just to drag it would be overwhelming.

Will it have an impact on tourism? Well if we suddenly decided to clear off for a long weekend somewhere like Venice, we might think twice about choosing that as our destination if we have to go out and buy new unwheeled cases and instead just choose Florence instead.
Sono d'accordo, Barmaid, Firenze o Siena....
These have silent rubber wheels, problem sorted!!

I went to Venice once. Probably among the most appalling places it has ever been my misfortune to visit. As with most things Italian (their wine, their food, their singing for example) it is a product of excessive hype and delusions of grandeur. This story was in the papers at least a week ago and my view then was that you should not need a suitcase to visit Venice as you'd be better off either not visiting the place at all or at the very least only going on a day trip.
Venice hasn't banned suitcases - they were considering it apparently, but this seems to be the latest -only commercial and goods carts.

Tsk. Can't believe anything you read in the papers (on the Internet) can you.
