USA hurricane....not much sympathy

There does not seem to much sympathy for the plight of the US states caught up in the devastation. Is there a part of us that relishes something like this that happens to a rich country. It is suffering after all. But is the suffering of the rich somehow acceptable to that of the poor.

Clanad-I am really saddened to think that we don't need help. We can use all the help we can get and the way you are speaking...we do sound like arogant Americans. I agree with Stretts-we don't need to act like we are better than any other country. All the countries are rich in thier own way. Just remember that!

Kramshell, if you haven't already accomplished it, you really need to go back and read the tone and tenor of this entire thread, from the very first question.  My response was prompted by Stretts input, but you only need to read brachiopod's response to the historical facts of the U.S. participation in the rebuilding of Europe (on more than one occasion) to grasp the ingrained anti-U.S. attitudes of some... and I emphasize some.  It is especially grating to standby and see the denigration of President Bush... linking his actions in Iraq, the tsunami relief and other totally non-relevant b.s. and then to try to hold ones counsel.  Fact is, we thank anyone that seeks to provide help, but... but... if no one chose to, we would take care of it... and the following week or month continue to take care of most other suffering around the world... as we always have.  If that's arrogance... so be it I guess. I'll leave brachiopod to argue with that ultimate Statesman, Winston Churchill concerning the Marshall Plan... The Marshall Plan was described by Winston Churchill as the �most unsordid act in history.�

 Yes i have sympathy with the people involved in this horrific nightmare of a storm. But,everybody knew it was going to be a category 5 storm, (the maximum possible) ,a couple of days before it hit. The weather men knew,the government knew,the press & media knew. For goodness sake even i knew and i live thousands of miles away. If a train is about to hit your house while travelling at upwards of 150mph,you do not decide to hide in the basement. You get as far away as possible & you LIVE another day, so does your family. This whole disaster has been made even worse by the stupidity of allowing people to stay in the area. Given the facts, do YOU really expect to see anything but suffering & death on our tv screens? No,neither did i.

I don't mean to sound heartless or anything, but in a way the American Govermnet have in a warped way got their commupence. i totally sympathise with the people that got affected by the hurricane , but i recently saw a news report on tv and it was amazing how some of the american people in other states were being very cold to the those affected by the hurricane. i distinctly remember seeing a woman saying (do forgive me i don't remember the exact words she used) that she didn't want the hurricane victims coming into their state. she said something to the affect of "we do not care ". i have sympathy for the american people, but if their fellow american citizens don't give a damn... then what?
