No one seems to have an answer to the basic point that I and others have been making. Are they simply supposed to absorb the missiles and do nothing? I asked Gromit on his thread but the silence was deafening.

Any missiles being fired are supposedly from Hamas. The attacks on Gaza are getting beyond unbelievable, I saw photos yesterday of a man shot by Israeli sniper as he was looking among rubble for survivors. I obviously don't know this man but doubt very much he was a terrorist. If they want war take it to the 'terrorists' don't kill innocents. So far I have seen stories of so many children killed, attacks on hospitals and schools. Tbh, my mind is changed as to who are the terrorists in all this
It's almost inevitable that incidents from the past will be dragged into this. As it happens, I don't think the Allied bombing campaigns of eg Dresden were at all proportionate. Tens of thousands of people dead, a beautiful ancient city levelled virtually overnight, and for no military purpose whatsoever.
Wars bring out the worst in people, sadly -- and we are seeing that in Gaza too. I don't think Israel should sit idly by while rockets are fired into its territory daily, but there is no way that their response is appropriate. It's just creating more innocent victims.

No, I think what people are questioning is the quality of their responses.
When mainland Britain was targeted by the IRA, we didn't use long range missiles to decimate Catholic estates in NI.
The core problem is that there is a dispute over land. Solve that, and you're halfway there.
Turning the question around - do the Palestinians have a valid claim on the disputed territory? If 'yes', then what needs to be done to resolve the dispute?
I don't see either side giving way on this, which means this conflict is due to run and run...

No, I think what people are questioning is the quality of their responses.

They are supposed to comply with UN Resolutions regarding their illegal occupation of other people's land and seriously address the issue of long term relations with their neighbours.
Instead, they continue to build new developments on Palestinian land and squeeze the Palestinians into a massive encircled prison where Israel can suppress and dominate the population with their superior weaponry.
And they won't change. Because their long term plan has always been the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians out of the territory - one way or another.

Honestly? I wonder if Israel's response isn't just going to bring out more missiles in the future. Every one of the people killed by their attacks has family. They'll ask exactly the same question that you are, 3T: "Am I supposed to sit idly by when they killed my son/daughter/mother/father?"
The answer they'll come to is negative, and in the future, they'll launch another attack. Then Israel will ask the same question: "Are we supposed to do nothing while they launch rockets at us?"
So yes, 3T. Eventually, someone will have to do nothing. Someone will have to choke back tears and mourn their losses, and be big enough not to respond with violence. At this point, doing nothing would achieve so much more than whatever atrocity you call "doing something" has.

I believe they are supposed to find those responsible and apprehend them rather than hit back indiscriminately harming the innocent. If the issue is not obvious then compare it to the UK and Northern Ireland troubles a while back. Was the proper response to the violence to level areas maybe ? In which case the UK government was clearly too lenient.
