Have not seen any comment on this one today.Firstly may I say I cannot stand Jeremy Clarkson but have we become that thin skinned that a nursery rhyme we have taught children for generations causes offence.Guy Gibson's dog would be turning in his grave.

Catch a tigger by his/its toe

If he/it squeals..
He's an arse ... but the fuss is just botox
It is a ridiculous situation when black people can call each other that word but if white people use it its offensive. If you are going to ban the word let it be for everyone - no discrimination.
This level of political correctness is utterly puerile - the classroom snitch gleefully snitching to the teacher. There is much we can’t say including the ‘n’ word …. but everyone knows what the ‘n’ word is. How ridiculous society has become. What happened to 'sticks and stones'?
I am still unaware as to the actual circumstances of him allegedly reciting the line.
Was it at a party, on duty at Top Gear, drunken rant, unaware he was being filmed at a social event or some prank when he was a student etc?
Can anyone elnlighten me please?

My own opinion is that, although the evidence suggests that JC started to used the 'n' word on two occasions, he stopped on both occasions. That's exactly what I might have done if, unthinkingly, I'd started to use the words that I'd learnt as a child but suddenly held back upon realising that they're now regarded as unacceptable.

There have been times when I've regarded JC as 'bold' for saying what he thinks and there have been times when I've regarded him as a total pr*t but 'liar' is one word I definitely wouldn't associate with him. If he'd have used the 'n' word he would have either justified it (as he saw it) or apologised for it, but not denied it. This story just seems like another attempt by the media to smear a popular celebrity (even though he might not always be 'popular' with many people, including myself, anyway!)
I don't actually think our planet as gone 't1ts up'- why do you?
Thanks for the links guys. Still confused as to who leaked out the BBC footage, unless someone at Top Gear has it in for him.

The use of the word is abhorrent but it is head-scratchingly puzzling when black people (mainly rappers etc) are allowed to use it with impunity on a regular basis. If the NAACP supposedly held a 'funeral' for the word a few years back, shouldn't it be taboo for all?
I think the thing is you can wear your own stuff like armour whatever the insult, but if someone not similarly affected ( by race, colour, religion or sex etc) does it, it risks becoming offensive.
Perhaps Mr Clarkson should stick to what he's best at...writing articles for the Sunday papers, presenting his hugely popular motoring programme, cheating on his wife...and wearing jeans that went out of style in the early 90s.
I thought it was ridiculous from the start. He didn't call anyone the word. It was from an old rhyme we all know from childhood, as others have said.
Some people are too happy to jump on him when they don't know the circumstances or what he actually said. Some still have a go at him for saying he wanted strikers in London to be shot, when he was really saying he supported them, and that's been explained many times including taking up a whole Sunday Times column.

Agree, agree, let's have equality, it would not be tolerated if whites could use certain words but other could not. but it seems that others would wish to hold some power over us,
Chilldoubt -

What are you suggesting that he wears 'dropped crotch' jeans?
AOG

No.

He should acknowledge that Chris DeBurgh is no longer the style icon he once was.
