The mural (of an "Alice in Wonderland" theme, at a primary school in Edinburgh) was painted in 1936 and has both artistic and historical significance, as evidenced by its recent restoration under a Heritage Lottery Grant.

If the complaint is upheld and the mural is adjudged to be likely to incite hatred, then clearly it cannot remain in its present form. Yet because of its historical significance, to purge the offensive item would be tantamount to vandalism.

How would you resolve this conundrum?

Use a bit of common?
Paint over the golliwog. There was no golliwog in the story of 'Alice in wonderland' as far as I know.

Yet again someone claiming to be offended for the sake of it imo!
I doubt anyone will be offended however a bunch of do gooding liberal right on weird beards from Islington will be offended on behalf of those they think should be offended.
How would you resolve this conundrum?
------------
By asking the 'offended' parent to find an alternative school for their child.
I hate golliwogs, but in this case it may serve a purpose as a means to educate children about what was once acceptable but is not now.
For Funks Sake, why is it racist? Because there is a golly on the shelf? Get a life
Agree with Welshie. Pathetic!
Jaysus, this pc crap gets more pathetic daily.

There are Gollies openly on sale on the pier in Llandudno and in some of the other shops too - should they be investigated for being racist?
That would depend on how many 'Right On' people there are on Llandudno's council, Welshy.
Hang on a second.

Someone's complained, the police are looking into the complaint. End of story (at the moment).

If the 'offending' image is painted over, then perhaps people can start complaining about 'PC gone mad' - but until something actually happens, should we not wait?

In a country of 65 million people, practically anything can spark complaints.

Did you know that the very funny Marmite advert from earlier this year sparked 200 complaints?

Did you know that Lady Gaga wriggling about in her bra and pants on The X Factor garnered 260 complaints?

There are vast numbers of people who wear knickers primed and ready to get into a twist.
Exactly triggerhippy.

that's true enough; but neither involved the participation of the police. whilst only one complaint in this matter, it does involve an indictable offence, and there could be charges.
The world's gone mad !

triggerhippy
if only 1 person has complained then it surely cannot be upheld, especially if it has been there for 80 yrs or more.

But this is 21st century hyper PC UK.
